how hard is it to understand DRAGON not LIZARD. i mean really, what does the doc need to see Kai breathe fire?

Look at it from the Doc's perspective. As from what I've gathered through this comic dragons are pretty unique. He might not even be aware that hybrid dragons exist.

yes cause doctors are kind of sticklers to certain check boxes. They don't really go by things they have yet to see unless they have a theory or ect about it beforehand. Not all doctors or scientist are like this but many can be quite stuck in preconceived notions which is why they make double blind studies

Afterall it took the Manhattan project to get most scientist to talk about theorums and abstract aspects. They screamed we do not go by quaky hazy clouds of statistics or probability we deal with Hard Concrete Facts. Sadly cracking the atom proved that Probability is baked into the universe and now scientist don't even notice they constantly say we are 99.900001 % sure of this

I admit I came into this comic series like 20 ish episodes ago but I'm guessing dragons aren't a common hybrid or still mythical creatures in this world?
I really should go back and read the series from the start

It's only now that we learn about how rare dragons are. But you should still read the comic from the beginning. It's certainly worth it^^

Kai and Kaya are actually the only two known dragon hybrids. Well, not officially known as we see here, but they are the only two dragons :p

I'll just point out... Lizards don't have ears. Ever. Nor do they have hair. While some dragons are known for their long somewhat donkey like eyes, which Kai and his sister have, and their manes, which they also have. Even if you excuse the hair, they have a line of hair on their tail. A dragon trait as well. You're a doctor and biologist. Know your phylogenic markers!

To be fair, not all hybrids follow the rules of their animal counterpart exactly. There are varying degrees of hybridization.

That said, Kai's ears should have him thinking anyway xD

If Kai won't convince the doctor, then obviously Kaya will.

You know, I keep forgetting to ask: How genetic is the type of hybrid? I figure Kai and Kaya were both dragons because twins. Though Jesse's Adventure (via Jesse and his brother) suggests that there's something at play.

The same kind of hybrid for siblings is most likely, but it doesn't have to be that way. Different species can happen. It does have something to do with genetics, though.
