kittmouri decided to do a little coloring contest with her Sweet Shoppe character Mint, and this is my submission. (make sure to click full view!)
~~~~~
A lazy romantic evening in a cozy cottage someplace far away from everything and everyone. Some quiet jazz music is playing on a stereo, hidden somewhere form view. A fire is crackling merrily in the fireplace, keeping the cottage comfortably warm and filling it with its soft orange light. All in all a perfect evening to enjoy a glass of green melon nip...
And off course, each other.
I went all out on this one. ^_^ The drawing I'm working since Christmas still isn't finished, which was starting to annoy me a little, so the change of 'drawing scene' was welcome.
Her colors were very tricky, because with the way I make the fur texture, I sort of loose the control over the color (especially the saturation), in addition of the fact that I set the scene in a dimly lit room. I think I did fairly well though.
Well Kitten, hope you like!
You're very welcome, it's definitely a very well-earned compliment! You're definitely a talented artist! I'm doing... reasonably on my coloring, but to this, I admit defeat =~.^=
Haha, and I'll make sure to direct her to just that spot where Ceiling Cat's hole in the ceiling is, so she won't hurt herself too badly when she goes through the roof =~.^=
Haha, well, I think he will too! I sure wouldn't mind spending some time with a lovely and talented lady like Kitty as company =^_^=
And yes, I can certainly see you have the right tools, and the right talent! I got an old, full version of Photoshop from someone yesterday (yay!!, and I'm seriously considering getting myself a cheap tablet too, just for my coloring work, but even with that, I just know I will have to get in years of hard practice, trial and error and a looot of hard work to get to this amazing level of goodness! =^_^=
Yeah, I wouldn't either ^_^
Honestly, I think it's more knowledge than skill. I think ~75% of that coloring practice is in my gallery. (It happens very rarely that once I start coloring, I don't finish it.) And if you remove all sketches, line art and traditional work, it's not all that much.
No - making a good drawing is much harder :)
I bought my tablet because I've been drawing ever since dad had MacPaint on his b&w apple. (MsPaint didn't even exist yet, I think.) So I figured the odds of me buying a tablet and never using it anymore after a while were pretty small. And indeed, it turned out to be one of the best purchases I ever made. :)
Oh yes, I certainly agree with you there; actually making a picture itself is a darn lot harder! I have tried so many times and given it a lot of practice because I get such great visions of my characters (there's two scenes from two of my new stories that have been floating around in my head for weeks now); I can so totally see the perfect picture in my mind, but I just can't get it down on paper... I fail horribly when I try, no matter how much I practice.
Ah well... but I'm a good story-teller and rather fluent in two languages, I think that's already a good bit of skill to be proud of and be content with =^_^=
Yes, and I'm really thinking it would be a great thing for me to do as well, buying a tablet! I mean, I know I would most likely only use it occasionally for coloring work, so a cheap or even second-hand one would be good enough already, but even so, I have the idea, what with the feedback I've been getting on my recent flat colorations, and the fun I'm having with Photoshop, that I might turn out to use it much more than I'm initially thinking I will! So indeed, once I get me a bit of income again and can afford me some luxury, I'm going to be looking around for a tablet after I've gotten me a new computer first (because this old laptop I'm now using is not mine, firstly, and too slow (it only has one USB 1.1 port, for instance) for another =~.^=
Made on a Sony Vaio laptop, 265 MB or RAM, 650MHz Pentium III, winXP, USB 1.1*, wacom volito2 tablet. They don't make laptops like they used to anymore :) I used paint shop pro 7 for this. Choice of software is very important on an old PC. I did have to color the pic after resizing it to screen size, so it's not really good for printing.
What I learned a lot from was copying work from other artists that I really liked by hand (not by tracing), and by learning how to construct bodies and faces, using geometric shapes. If you google, there are plenty of tutorials for that. And I keep experimenting as much as possible.
~~~
*(the only thing you need USB 2 for is high powered devices such as maybe scanners or external hard drives that are powered by the USB port, and for high data rates. usb1.1 only goes up to ~1MB/s, which is no good if you have a 1GB to transfer to/from a usb stick. You can even use a A4 sized tablet on usb1.1, I actually tried that.)

Ohh, that's a real nice picture! Haha, if I would meet any bunny girl with such a predatory, carnassial grin, however, I would worry... a lot! =~.^=
It looks real good, though! And it's very good to know that even an old and slow laptop could handle it! I guess I'm a bit spoiled; I never had a laptop before, all my computers have always been desktop PCs, so I got used to the big screen and the big keyboard and the upgrade possibilities and everything =^_^= Plus, I suppose I based my opinion on the fact I constantly get warnings on this laptop I use now; "Windows has run out of virtual memory" (that happened quite often when I used Gimp and the program would close... right in the middle of my work!), and each time I connect my external hard drive, the taskbar pops up with a balloon saying "This apparatus can work faster if you connect it to a USB2.0 port". I use a four-port hub, which is 2.0, since I use both my optical mouse and my external hard drive on this laptop, but the USB port on the laptop is just 1.1.
But thanks a lot for that information, it really was helpful in making me understand I don't necessarily need a state of the art desktop PC to run additional hardware =^_^= (okay, software, though, that's another thing... =~.^=)

Thanks! Chery is a bat actually. But, you know, details ;)
That makes sense, you can't squeeze the USB2.0 data rates (50 MB/s ?) through a USB1.0 (1 MB/s) port. ^_^ And you probably can connect the keyboard of your PC to your laptop too (as well as the monitor!)
~~~
Provided you have enough hard drive space, you could try this to avoid the virtual memory problem (in winXP):
Start -> Control panel -> System (note here how much RAM you have)
Then go to the 'Advanced' tab -> 'Performance' button -> 'Advanced' tab in the new window -> click the 'change' button.
Here you can select how big the page file (=virtual memory) on each hard drive should be. They recommend Not to let the system manage it, and making the 'minimum' and 'initial' size equal, and in total 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have. (though, since you've been short on memory, I would make it twice the size to start with)
Doing defragmentation first (see hard drive properties -> 'tools' tab) might speed up you system a bit. Defrag takes pretty long though.
~~~
Hehe... I always like to say I used to be a computer nerd, but I still have the skills ;)

Oh, and don't forget to click the 'set' button after changing the 'minimum' and 'initial' size values. :)

Ohhh, thanks! I'm going to have to take a look at that! I have to admit I'm a bit wary of fooling around too much with settings on this laptop, since it's only a borrowed one, but I think doing that could do no harm (and I could always reverse it when I return the laptop once I have a computer of my own again =~.^=
*nods*
And indeed, there's also a PS/2 port for either a mouse or a keyboard on this thing, which I use to connect my keyboard, and there's outlets for an external monitor and printer and all. Though I'm definitely not using my old monitor on this thing... for one, I have to sit on my bed to get the best connection, so there's no place for a big extra monitor... and my monitor is really big and really old! One of those heavy old-fashioned ones in a huge case; the monitor on this laptop isn't even all that smaller, and it's flat, which is sooo much better! =^_^=

Mmm... it was odd, really. I think there might be some kind of security or something on this laptop. Here's what I did:
Configuratiescherm -> Systeem -> Geavanceerd
Prestaties -> Geavanceerd -> Virtueel geheugen -> Geavanceerd
That's where I see the following options:
Wisselbestandgrootte voor geselecteerd station:
Station: C:
Beschikbare ruimte: 9473MB
Aangepaste grootte: Begingrootte (MB): 192
Maximale grootte (MB): 427
Door het systeem beheerde grootte
Geen Wisselbestand
Totale wisselbestandsgrootte voor alle stations:
Minimal\al toegestaan: 2MB
Aanbevolen: 766
Momenteel toegewezen: 427
I have selected the "Aangepaste grootte" of the first three options, and put in 766. Then I hit the "Instellen" button, and then the "OK" buttons, and... well, nothing happens. It says 766 in that slot for "Maximale grootte", but in the lower part of the window, it still says "Momenteel toegewezen: 427"
Am I doing something wrong?

Weird. rebooting windows should have done it... The values also changed in the list (at the top of the window where all the drives are listed) when you pressed 'Instellen'?
Note you should change both fields numbers to 766 (I can't make out form your previous post if you did that for the 'Initiële grootte' too - or whatever that is in Dutch)

The size which I changed, from 427 to 766, that one changed to 766 after I pressed the "instellen" button, yes. Mmm... are you using XP in English language? You probably meant "Initial size", and that would most likely be the field of "Begingrootte", which said 192 on my laptop. I did not change that one; that might have been what I did wrong! I'll go try it again and change that field too, *chuckles* Well, tomorrow, right now it's sleepy time for fluffy kitties =~.^=

Like it? I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT! I love how you added an entire background and I love how this looks so painterly! For a second, I thought you printed this out and painted over it and then rescanned it! It's amazing! I just love it to bits!!!

Aw, thank you!!
*hugs and chuckles* Nope, the only traditional media I have is colored pencil and oil crayons ;).
But the background was meant to look that way ^_^. It's mostly just fiddling with the settings of one of the brushes that come standard in PS, and the fur is done with a brush I custom made for the purpose some time ago.

You're very welcome, Petey! Yes, this certainly looks like an absolutely awesome cobination! I really wish I had your talent, hee! I used to be quite alright with coloring stuff, but I've never been able to give it any effects or anything. Then again, having only cheap colored pencils, and lateron only MS Paint to work with, doesn't really help, I guess... =~.^=

Yeh, I find it handy still for a few very basic things, like finding proper color ues for my characters and so, but... that's about it =~.^= Still, it's already a big step forward that it now also opens jpegs and png's and such, and can even save pictures in those formats instead of only as gif's or bmp's =~.^=
*giggles*
Well, and I would need to find some way to print out the picture, and then scan it again when I'd be done with it... and I can't do that because my old printer/scanner/copier is busted. Plus, I don't have any coloring pencils, hee hee! =~.^=

That is exactly what I tried to accomplish with the background. I looked at the picture and tried to figure out what the setting could be. She's relaxed, and looking slightly dreamy at you. So I asked myself 'what could be the story behind that?' and this is what I came up with. ^_^
