I've had things explode in checked bags before but not markers. Of course, I don't think I've ever flown without my art supplies in my carry-on. The cabin is typically the only part of most planes that's entirely pressurized and temperature controlled, so the temperature and air pressure both drop and liquids expand and things go boom.

Tip: During teenage angst do not write with your good inking pens, you will crush the nibs under the weight of your drama. Use a ballpoint, they can take it. :P I ruined a really good .01 Staedler pen back in the day scrawling my woes. xP

I always put my markers in my suitcase and have never had any issue... it was just the microns!
