Since the mule bots would be working in close proximity to crew members onboard the ships, and would have to come with decisions and solutions about how to navigate around crew safely themselves; I decided to provide the animators and storywriters idea on how the mules might operate in conjunction to the crew. I did a couple pages of quick sketches showing some of the ideas of how they might navigate around the busy corridors of the fleet.

When encountering a human blockage (I doubt it would be able to differentiate), perhaps having it emit an immediate beep when it comes to a halt, two beeps in succession at the ten second mark, then perhaps the "bump" on the 30 second mark.
Remember, in a busy environment there may be a bunch of different reasons someone is standing still in the hallway, and the last thing you want is to inadvertently knock someone over, or startle or disturb them if they're simply not paying attention. Especially if they have an armful of tools or supplies. Often times, a couple loud beeps will be enough to get the person to recognize he's in the way.
Also, depending on what the mule is carrying, 60 seconds can be a long time. especially if it's carrying the Captain's morning coffee....

It's a pretty neat concept. I had seen something similar in an RPG book set done by Dreampod 9 called the Jovian Chronicles. Though in their versions, the automated 'box' had a bit more computer power, just below that of a limited AI, so it didn't have to report back to a home station. It also incorporated a walker system with the wheels so it could also navigate stairs within a gravity environment. I would suspect that such a thing would make it far more expensive, as well as needing more processing power to manage the extra limbs.
Wheels do wonders and make the whole machine simple to make and operate, but do have limitations, such as with stairs. I hope your mules know how to recognize a sudden drop in their path. I bet an internal map of the general area they work in would be useful. I would guess it depends on how technological the robots could be made. Its just some thoughts.
I've weaved a world of my own over the course of 14 years that one could almost consider a space opera and adventure mix. The sad thing is, I haven't ever gotten around to writing or drawing anything good enough to show based off it yet.
I really like how you weave a little humor into your art, even if it's of a more technical nature. I wish you luck with your designs and the production of the project your working on.
