Surf's up! This is a triptych in pastel chalks at a whopping 36" X 72" (3x6 feet). "He'e Nalu" is the traditional Hawaiian term for surfing or "wave sliding".
The dog's name is Howlee and he loves shredding those tasty North Shore swells.
AND this piece is up for sale! PM me for price and details. Thanks for lookin' and long live the endless summer (until winter when snowboarding kicks in...).

I never met a triptych of yours that I didn't like, and this is no exception. :)
The waves are beautiful. You really conveyed a sense of grandness by doing a longer shot like this. Very cool!
This made me think of an interesting question - do you often do artwork that is not toony? In the sense of more traditional subjects such as landscapes/seascapes (which this pic made me think of), portraiture, and the like? I know you like figure drawing, of course. Just curious. :)

Thanks, Soba! I only started making landscapes about five years ago as an element for the characters to be in/interact with. Someday I'd like to make some strictly traditional landscapes, but mainly it's just been a 'backdrop'.
Pastels are so fun to use and they can be a nice substitute for oils or watercolor to get a more realistic look (both of which are also fun...wait for the first furry oil painting ). Plus on the big surfaces, it's a lot simpler!

You're welcome! It's kinda cheesy at times, but I really like "Step into Liquid". It's got a nice mixture of surfing by the pros, heartwarming scenes (such as the Irish/Northern Irish kids surfing together), and just plain silliness (such as folks off the Texas coast who surf off the wakes of oil tankers). All in all, I think it does a great job at expressing the joy of surfing in all its forms.
*bongos bangin'* Buppa-buppa buuuuhppa/buppa-buppa-buh! I love the old theme song! I hope they don't re-do it badly... ("Yo! Hawai'i Five-O! Chillin' on the Islands, don'tcha know? Chasin' down suckuhs, from surfers to truckuhs, ain't nobody mess with my muthuh-BEEPuhs")
Oh man, do I love the new Battlestar Galactica. Totally worried it would suck because the original was so dear to my juvenile heart. I used to make Cylon masks for my friends and I in the third grade, and we'd all talk through harmonicas. Okay, so young and so dorky...But the new version is maybe the best series ever made for TV. Even Twin Peaks started running out of steam in the second season, but BSG never quit.
I really love how this makes me feel when I look at it. On one hand, the sky and the color of the waves give off a sort of noble, nostalgic feel, but the surfer gives me a happy, living in the moment vibe. I'm not sure if that was the intention but it works really well for me and it's really cool. :x
Thank you so much for the feedback. I love hearing interpetations and thoughts about art of all kinds.
The initial intention was a celebration of surfing. I wanted to create maximum movement and action in a static moment. However, I guess it does contain a message after all. The wave is so big and powerful, just doing it's thing. But it won't stop the surfer from doing *his* thing, you know?
Maybe it's a subconscious message about life; it's way bigger than we are, but why not ride out the challenges and have fun while taking advantage of it's momentum?
Sometimes you wipe out. Sometimes it almost drowns you. But you get back on that board and swim through the ups and downs life throws your way. If you want to get the most out of the wave, then you take your chances and dominate your fear, balancing on a thin line between success and failure, staying upright with the skills you learn and practice up to the moments when you need them most.

Yeah! That's so awesome! That message is by and large what I try to embody in my life and the way I treat others. My friends always groan because I have a TON of Capoeira metahpors. Usually about about how life is full of danger (vulnerabilities, sharing yourself with others, just walking outside) just like a game of Capoeira, but we all take those risks together in order to express ourselves and experience others...in Capoeira its two players creating danger for each other, but instead of perceiving danger with fear and stress, you instead can look at it as a game and a dance...dancing and playing your way through the trials of life...or something to that effect I suppose. I tend to get anxious and scared easily so Capoeira has helped me a lot in changing how I look at things.
I might show some of the concept sketches here, but I make it a policy not to post anything like commissions, work that's been sold or will be used for artshows to keep it as a unique piece. Most of the gallery is personal work that isn't for sale or displayed with permission by the owner. If the diptych doesn't sell at FC, then I might post the image to try and sell here :)
Right on... shooting some super pipe. I dig surfing, even tho i haven't ever done it. I like to watch events from time to time. I'm into skating free style longboard, tho i injured my left knee almost a year ago. I haven't really been able to get back on my deck.. i need knee surgery.. anyhow I really dig "board" sports tho. Just thought I'd say hell yeah.. I really like to see sport themed furry art. Great job.
Sweet thanks! I thought about making a "board sports fur" group but haven't committed. Glad you like the piece and sorry you hurt your knee...I did the same on a snowboard; hit a jump, landed on a stiff pair of legs and effed up my left knee. I can still function but if I try to land big jumps, YOWCH! Anyway, thanks again!
Bummer you injured yourself. Right on tho. I like your furry board sports affinity group idear. I'd be one of the first to jump on deck (turn of phrase so to speak). If u start one I'd hella promote it too. If u start one up please let me know so I can join up. Thanks for the small chat. I'd like to chat some more if you are up to it. Until then grab some rail.. catch some air...get wet or carve some powder. I can dig it. Peace.
