Live Above the Influence
I saw a commercial the other day with this symbol in it plastered all over shirts, bikes, backpacks, hats and everything else you can possibly imagine and it took me back two years ago when my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I remember how hard it was for my family and for him, to struggle through times of uncertainty. I then think about all those other kids who have parents or even peers who smoke or do drugs and I wonder why so many fall under the spell of such an addictive behavior. I soon realize that a lot of those people lack a closely knit support group that I always had, that had taught me otherwise and is why to this very day I have never abused any substance.
So this submission is for them, for all of those kids (and adults) who never had that group to back them up. When my dad was sick, he had a support group, one that brought him back to where he is today, out of the pit of ever lingering death and back to the surface. He would have never had to endure such hard times if someone, back in his past, would have taken away the cigarette and helped him get over his addiction.

Haters: I am sorry if you don't understand -my- views on this. I did not draw this to say it was okay to back this company, I only drew this for my dad and HIS problem. It was a very hard time for my family and if any of you have dealt with similar issues or even worst then I hope you will understand and take into consideration my views and feelings before slamming me with you're all revealing know how. Politics DO NOT interest me, I am barely able to understand them as it is. I do not know the entire meaning of this group, just the fact that something like this from a daughter to her father is a very important step. Now I call you haters because I notice a lot of the people that are slamming this picture as of late all do drugs. I will not say I am sorry for drawing this. I did not make the group nor do I donate to it. My small little picture here isn't going to help the group out against fighting drugs as well. The simple arrow sign was and still is for my dad who struggled from cancer because of nicotine. Just because you drink or smoke or do any type of drug also doesn't mean I hate you. We all have our own lives to live and we choose what is going to happen in them. I am not here to try to control or change anyones outlook in any way. I just know there are kids out there who don't have help and are sucked into some really bad situations. Many of you, as I have seen, do these things on your own and for that I give you Kudos. Now go, live your life, do what you're going to do and don't slam me for something I merely did as a gift for a father who was very scared.

THank you so much :D Keep on him... The thing I have learned with smokers is that they will quit when they are good and ready but they will need that influence as much as possible. To them, the cig is closure for a bad day, it helps them relax and not to mention they are addicted to it of course. I would highly recommend drawing something like this for your dad, show him you really care and that he doesn't need a smoke in his life.
I agree I have never done drugs or smoked or drank alcholic beverges before (im not old enouhg to drink any way but I wont any way) I hate how some of my friends do that shit I mean thats all you here in hihg school now a days its sick that 90% of our school does drugs and outer stuff im glad that I havnt and I never will

Hehe good for you! I haven't done any of these things either and I am over the drinking age. It's just not worth it.. yeah it might be 'cool' now but you need to think ahead and what this stuff might be doing to your body. Everything eventually comes back and bites you. My dad found that out the hard way and the real bummer was he had quit smoking for three years before he was diagnosed! The cancer had already started before he stopped... thankfully, with the amazing support group and his strong will to get better he has kicked the cancer and is doing well.
Not happening. He's been doing it for over 20 years. He's well into his 60's and doesn't give a damn about his health.
Hellz yeah! *high fives* I'm not legally allowed to anyway, but I really have no desire to do so. I've seen my fair share of people doing stupid things while drunk XD

That's too bad. It took my dad until he was about 50 to quit and even though he did it was too late as far as the cancer goes. ;-; He has come through with flying colors though.
xDD Yeah... everyone on my dads side drinks as well as those on my moms side. I know my younger sister does (she's not of age) and even though I am I rather not be a part of that.

Live above the influence and do what they say or you will live in your basement forever. I do a shit ton of drugs and I honestly don't like this group. They don't give a truth or even say make your own choices free of influence they say live above it and DON"T do drugs which is a command.
No, this ain't a bash against your or them. I just want them to change there slogan XD

It costs around $20,000 in taxpayer money to keep someone in prison for one year. Glad to know my money is being used to lock up non-violent drug offenders. Which is nearly 1/4 of the people in US prisons. Gotta keep them stoners put away or they might do something dangerous, like eat Twinkies or listen to shitty music or something.
lol true...yet there are some who are violent ^^; and that just screw their life up...just from doing the idotic shit they do...i wont do drugs smoke pot ect...bleh and i know that 20k goes to keep those idoits in prison...my dad was there most of my life...rarely got to see him....When i met him i thought he was an uncle so i called him uncle chad. but anyways ppl make stupid choices in this world and its something people have to deal with
Certainly does kill your mind! Recent study found that it causes mental problems.
And it really wastes heaps of your time. Town in USA where everyone does drugs except the postmaster, and he has to look after everyone, cause they're completely out of it - and the universal thing the drug-taking residents say is they took drugs and...where did the last 20 years go?

"Drugs kill"? Um, like, I don't know that spouting off things like that, that are frankly too vague to be true, is, y'know....really any better than the other side of the propagandistic coin. Basically, "You will die if you don't live your life exactly as I tell you to!" Also, I've gotta say, it's absurd to think that the only reason anyone tries drugs ever is because other people are "influencing" them. Does free will mean nothing?
The most important thing I've learned in life: If it's not harming anyone, what right do you have to meddle? Gay marriage is illegal partly because straight people everywhere still hold some sort of absurd belief that this actually affects them, when quite clearly it doesn't. And then they further justify this thought process with such gems as, "Well, if we let the fags get married, then....then it's only a matter of time till they let some guy marry his dog, too!" Which, of course, is the same sort of false equivalency you're employing here. That easy-going stoner kid is certainly not in the same league as that greasy meth addict who will break into your home and steal your stuff to sell, for more meth money. Addiction is a terrible thing, that much we could agree on, but not everyone who has touched some sort of drug in their lifetime is an addict, and quite frankly that line of thinking is sort of offensive.

I don't think you fully understand why I drew this... I didn't draw this to go against drugs entirely. I drew this because of my dad and his fight with cancer. If you have a problem with this group, best to take it up with the group themselves. I am just simply taking their logo and using for a situation in my own life.
...I was apparently in an angry, ranty mood that day. Bipolar disorder and all. My sincere apologies.
I certainly sympathise with your situation. By no means did I intend to marginalise it, and I have rather less-than-positive views on tobacco myself. I just figure there's a more dignified way to comment on the situation than by appropriating a largely inaccurate government propaganda campaign. It's a personal issue to me, since I've struggled with depression for more or less the entirety of my life. Every supposedly "safe" prescription medication I've been put on has caused violent and unpredictable changes in me. Marijuana has been the only thing capable of balancing my mood during my more depressive swings, and I suppose I simply resent said campaign's implication that this somehow makes me worse than those who don't suffer from chemical imbalance issues. That's it.

Very nice image. It is good to have a group to turn to as the opinion of the general public can sometimes seem overpowering.
I've always been a little upset with the way in which this group tries to deal with this problem - cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs aren't a total evil in their experience, and in many ways they can give one a new angle from which to consider the larger image of life and its purpose - the evil comes with addiction, dependency, and desire for these things. I partake in all 3 occasionally, but have never allowed myself to "need" them (and try to perform an intervention with my more subliminal mind when I feel or have thoughts that begin to steer towards such a thing.)
Individuals who have to smoke weed every day, or a cigarette every 3 hours, or get wasted every friday, as an alternative to a greater solution for deficiencies in their life, is what I find troubling. Because, I find these substances akin to going to the movies - you sit there for an experience, and return to normal life and think about what that experience was. Could you imagine living your whole life in a movie theater?
I only wish these groups would focus their campaigns more on preventing addiction and methods to do so, rather then encouraging total abstinence from the experience as the only solution. I do apologize using your image as a forum for these concerns but there seemed to be a lot of discussion going on in here already.

No appology needed. I see where you are coming from and I think you stated your case very well. A lot of people mistake this image and think that I heavily back AbovetheInfluence, which I don't. I only drew this for my dad to help him in a time of need when lung cancer had him down. I agree about the addiction part and I also have a friend that does a lot of the things you listed but in a very careful way and doesn't let himself get addicted either. I bet it's hard and for something like that I give a thumbs up.
Yeah, because the US Government's 'War on Drugs' isn't a giant gnashing, tax consuming, three ring circus of utter failure that has given rise to the highest rates in drug violence and wastes of taxpayers money on the imprisonment of non-violent drug offenders. It's working great, huh?
In a free country you should have the right to put whatever you please into your own body. What you're supporting isn't some concept of being a purer, and healthier person. It's the support of criminalization of personal choice and freedom, tool.

I don't understand the US Goverment nor do I intend to try too. I do notice that they give us things then take it away and that they think they have to poke their noses in other people business which in turn costs billions of dollars that are expected to be repaid by the tax payers which in my opinion is royal bs. All those high and mighty gentlemen get to sit in office and 'play' around with their citizens hard earned money. It's not right at all.
Listen homie, if you don't want to do drugs, thats cool. But the Above the Influence group is part of the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign which is funded (with taxpayer money), organized, and run by the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Which is probably one of the most counter-productive and corrupt agencies of utter nonsense and propaganda that our Government has ever wasted our money on.
If you want to live a drug free live, cool. But don't support draconic government propaganda machines that want to criminalize and imprison your fellow citizens for exercising free choice.

I lived in Washington DC's Metro area for the first 21 years of my life, and I will tell you from experience that if you have any concern over your personal freedoms and rights, then you'd better learn as much as you can about the was our government really is. With all the shit that's gone on in the last ten years, it's imperative that everyone know as much as they can, otherwise we all are getting fucked.
"A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn is a good place to start.

Wow. I disagree with you so much right now. How do you feel about substances that not only are harmful to the user, but greatly increase their chance of harming others? Do you think people should be allowed to do those, despite the fact that it could cause harm to people who don't want anything to do with them?
So should people should have the right to get drunk, drive, and plow headfirst into a car and kill the mother and infant inside? I have a sneaky suspicion you've never had to witness that, and are able to distance yourself from the reality of situations like that. Out of sight out of mind, so to speak.
You're putting words in my mouth. Nobody has the right to endanger others. And driving under the influence should be illegal. But legislating a persons right to put what they please into their own bodies in privacy is wrong. Nobody should have the right to tell others, much less, imprison people from doing what they want to their own bodies. And as for your other question, yes, I've responded to a head on with two fatalities caused by a drunk driver. It was incredibly sad, and very haunting.
The thing is, once you do a drug that alters your behavior, judgment, reaction time, and all around intelligence you are now a thousand times more likely to hurt someone else because you are under the influence. Someone who has nothing to do with you, someone who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Certain drugs are illegal because they alter the way people act in such a way that they are likely to harm others, and alcohol is only legal because it makes people money. Honestly if they're going to outlaw drugs by that standard they should outlaw alcohol also, but they don't which is stupid.
Being somewhat of a notorious stoner among certain furries, I figure I'll throw my two cents in. First off, lemme say that there is just as much nothing wrong with not doing drugs as there is doing certain "drugs" responsibly and in moderation. Freedom of choice is freedom of choice, and everyone has that freedom.
The US government has a track record of importing hard drugs into the US, and dumping them into inner-city problem areas (roughly 80% of the cocaine used to make crack in the 80's through today was brought in via CIA backed drug cartels). This same government (granted not the same government organization, but they are all tied together) is responsible for the Above the Influence propaganda campaign. If you want to be part of this hypocrisy, then fine, but you should know that that's what it is first.
The above the influence campaign is a rather insidious propaganda program designed to limit personal freedoms. The primary reasons that certain substances are illegal in the first place are two. They are either highly addictive and physiologically destructive, like cocaine, meth, heroin, PCP, etc., or (more importantly), they allow a user to perceive outside of the socially accepted worldview of the user's culture. They can help people to actually think and perceive for themselves, without any cultural blinders on. This latter reason is the primary cause of the lack of legality of things like pot, mushrooms, LSD, DMT and things of the like. If you are a politician, the last thing you want is people thinking for themselves.
Now, as strange as it seems now, before the age of fifteen I was one of those little DARE/Above the Influence people myself. You get the kind of self righteousness that a religious fundamentalist has. I am pure, I am good, and that longhaired stoner with the KMK shirt on is a piece of shit drug user who I should treat like the trash he is. I am so much better than him. I know the mentality. But consider this, are you better than Carl Sagan, who openly thought up many of his ideas while expanded on pot? Or Steve jobs, who was a fan of LSD back in the day, like most of the people who got PCs rolling? Or any number of scientists and celebrities who smoke or have dropped a tab or two at one point.
And if you want to go off on drugs and family members, my father, who died of Multiple Sclerosis complications, would still be alive today if he was prescribed medical marijuana early on for pain and nerve-sheath protection, instead of getting killed by an implanted codeine pump and the slew of medications he was on for his last seven years.

How many like-situations can be present in which a neutral party is being coerced, if not forced into making the "socially acceptable" choice sans any experience in the matter? Politics, relationships/sexuality, food, drink, even the act of partaking in ANY substance. Would it surprise anyone to know that often the "above the influence" people in the workplace/school at least half of them would call you a "pussy" for only having 2 beers? Or a prude for not having a sexual encounter? What I'm trying to present is a horribly skewed presentation of everything "naughty" and I'm still at a loss for what the message was in the first place! In this conflict of anti-freedom of choice and pro-defamation of character based in one facet of an individuals life, we are now forced in youth, to think for ourselves. Wait! there's a fix for feeling crazy in your own head when living in a world where the pro-choice folk try to find common ground with the "anti-drug" movement. I don't think I have EVER heard something uplifting or nice associated with recreational drug usage or users when conversing with abolitionists, does hate really fix anything? Go ask Gadhafi.
There is a certain point where a definable disconnect happens in the mind of the individual who is presented with such a conundrum that is a natural part of our cognitive logic. This can manifest itself in a real personality disorder or ( as in enough cases as to be alarming) the individual can be misdiagnosed with a chemical imbalance or like head case that is just the exhibited symptoms of someone trying to figure this convoluted bullshit out. My Spiel: SSRI's MAOI's and amphetamines are being force fed to these individuals with a conflict with a VERY confusing reality.

Alright, I ain't hatin' on you as an artist or as a non-drug user-- you're talented, you have a message, I can respect that, that's what artists do. However, you say politics do not interest you, but you are using a VERY PROLIFIC political icon to make a statement. Bear with me for a moment while I explain. I remember when I was in middle school, I used to wear a Soviet hammer and sickle patch on my jacket because I thought it looked cool, I didn't care about politics, I just thought communism was about rebelling against the status-quo or some sort of angsty teen BS like that. Then one day, a teacher pulled me to the side, gave me a book on Soviet history and I quit wearing that patch after I read about Stalin's war atrocities and mass murders. If no one ever informed me about it's history, I might still be wearing it today and making myself look like something I'm not-- a tool.
Now. Using a draconian government propaganda campaign logo to commemorate a loved one's struggle with tobacco-induced illness is counterproductive, being that the government that funds Above The Influence also 100% completely supports big tobacco companies, and as a matter of fact rewards them for their profits. Not only that, but RJ Reynolds (the biggest tobacco company in the US) has a huge stake in the private prison industry that keeps non-violent drug offenders locked away. This is a program designed to give yet another platform to prohibitionist politicians who perpetuate misinformation, divide people on petty issues (so we turn on each other while they screw us all) and get rich selling the very drugs they've made illegal behind our backs. You think the U.S. military is involved with Afghanistan because of the war on terrorism? The Taliban is CIA-trained and was (maybe still is) CIA-funded, just another tool in the grand scheme of things. Afghanistan produces 92% of the ENTIRE WORLD'S opiates with it's massive sprawling poppy fields, which some of our soldiers are currently guarding with their lives. Just think about that for a minute. The Above The Influence campaign is but one tiny cog in a two-faced machine that eats our rights for breakfast, brainwashes our children and owes it's very existence to our squandered tax dollars which now threaten to shut down our nation's capital. Are you really going to continue blindly supporting such a political campaign while claiming to not care about politics?
There are more awesome and creative ways to make a tribute to a loved one and convey a message of warning than buying into Big Brother's commercials. These kinds of campaigns only keep the truly insane prohibitionist community foaming at the mouth and supporting a fascist regime that will only further attempt to strip away our freedoms. The more you assemble an identity from these symbols that separate us on trivial issues, the more individuality you will compromise that could be used to bring people together for a greater cause. Funny how they advertise that using drugs apparently means sacrificing one's individuality...

Do they now? I don't think many notice this but this is an old image. For some reason recently it has been getting a lot of anti-above the influence comments. I can see where you're coming from. There is a reason why I have not drawn this type of thing since.
Thank you for informing me.
It doesn't surprise me that this is the case.

I meant no disrespect, which surely you've sensed. :) If I didn't express my concern over these sorts of things, I'd be doing myself a huge disservice with the things I've learned over the years. Governments are supposed to protect us from other people, not ourselves and what we choose to put into our bodies, and when they do otherwise, they are fucking us. There's no nice word for it. Here's a fascinating article that opened my eyes a while back: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11660210
Now why is it that I can go to the gas station and by a 24 oz can of Earthquake for $1.27, which is 12% alcohol by volume and will make you blackout drunk, yet I can't smoke a joint and just relax without fear of being put in a cage? I asked a cop that same question and he said "probably because the government can't profit from it," which is funny seeing as how in the only 15 states where medicinal weed is legal, it's already a yearly 1.7 billion dollar industry...

^ This right here is more true than most of you will ever realize, I've got buddies right now doing this, guarding warehouses full of opium.
The Taliban was an awful, fundamentalist group who oppressed the people and enforced their own twisted version of Islamic law. You wanna know what else they did besides implementing laws and punishments not seen since the Dark Ages? ...They got rid of the all the US allied Warlords who also ran the Opium trade, they enforced prohibition of alcohol with brutal efficiency.
When the Taliban was taken out of power, the first people we put back in control were the drug lords.
As an artist and as someone who's lost several people to cancer I sympathize and applaud your intent behind the message and the art itself is wonderfully well done. I think perhaps though a better choice in iconography would have been more appropriate.
Adolph Hitler began one of the world's first anti-tobacco policies, as well as animal rights laws which were both practically unheard of for this era. < just an interesting side note with no real implication on this subject.

Thank god. Thank you for this. I cant STAND drugs. The fact is, most people say "you believe in anti drug lies" but the fact is that they are most likely believing in false pro drug facts. Most who are pro drugs are on it them selves and simply are speaking from their own personal views and such where as in the big picture, drugs are HORRIBLE for ones health and mental state. Sure it gives you TEMP enjoyment or help against some pain or something, yet I have yet to see one person, smoke it for a short period of time and be good for the rest of their lives. They say they don't get addicted to the drugs, sure, but you get addicted to the feeling, the sensation you get from it which is why you become "Addicted" to the drug. you need that false feeling/sensation of relaxation. That's why i'm anti drug and pro doing things that are legal, healthy and fun that you don't have to shove things that don't belong in your lugs to make you feel that way.
I could care less what others views are personally, that's just my own take on the drug war. I have worked my way through my parents divorce, living in 14 different homes in the span of 21 years, loosing friends over and over from moving, being an outcast, being picked on because of my weight, depression, panic attacks, sickness ... all from taking walks, drawing, reading, playing games, taking with friends.

Thank god for this comment. I am tired of getting random hate comments on this thing by those who are on drugs themselves. When I saw this in my inbox I rolled my eyes, having a suspicion it was just another comment telling me how wrong I am with this picture. I am plesantly surprised it is the complete opposite. A year and some later and it's still getting views. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I can't agree with you more! Also I am sorry about how life has turned out thus far for you. I hope I gets better!
Yay! I love your comment! I completely agree with everything!
I competely agree about the addictions - I think alot of people are like the Hollywood couple I read about a decade or so ago - noone thought they were drug adicts (they weren't the steryotypical living-in-a-hovel and obviously stoned) but they had to take drugs to have any fun at all. And that's one of the medical definitions of addiction!
And yeah, I didn't go through anything as bad as you (* hug* ) but I've been through alot - I got though it without drugs either!

There are too many drug using furs out there. They think it doesn't do anything to them. -EVERYTHING- does stuff to you. Even water does stuff to you. It is what happens to you that matters, and mind altering or physical altering drugs being abused can lead to less than savory results. I barely want to take medication, let alone do drugs.
To those who back weed: Studies have produced repeated results in memory loss and slothfulness. It can make you lazier, it can also cause you to become forgetful, even while off the drug. Yes it has downsides to go with your so called 'upsides'. Yes it's less harmful than cigarettes or alcohol, are we backing those up? Nope. Regardless. Do what you want, just keep us, who don't like it, out of it.
Lovely art, dear.
