This was something I drew up over a year ago but recent events have led me to thinking of resurrecting him and actually giving the whole Dungeons and Dragons thing a go.
Here is Arundare (swirly elfscript things not included) he is a gnoll raised by elves and thus does not possess the wanton savagery of his wilder kin, instead he has a harmonious understanding of the forest, the subtlety of an elven ranger, a liking for fine music and pipeweed and the body strength to put a longbow to effective use.
He was basically an excuse to play around with a funny idea and draw some furry beefcake in some sword and sorcerey get-up.
There may be fanservice in the future. All depends on whether I have the time.

Nice concept and character! I've ran catfolk before in DnD 3.5 (races of the wild detailed them) but thought that knolls would probably get killed before I get within 50 paces of my party :P
One of my best characters was a feline ranger. Though he did have that nasty streak when he got dominated and decimated the party, they a bounty was put on his head after that. Ah, Good times

depends on which system you're running in? I found the 3.5 edition version. says their stats were Str+4, Con+2, Int-1, Cha-2. they had two racial levels of human and a +1 level adjustment. They're described as mostly pack animals with little knowledge of mercy or honour. (all in the Races of the Wild book, probably loads of pdf's kicking about)
No idea on the 4th edition one. never really stuck to it as a system. But you are right. playing an animal race you have to play it on-the-fly and understand what your character would know and do.
GL with your writings though. I'm sure it'll be fun

4e stats are +2 Dex, +2 Con, making them a better fit to Archery Ranger than their old stats. Taking the "Raised by Another Race" background would allow you to gain +2 to Nature or Perception, as well (since those are the two skills that elves get bonuses for).
Gnolls start with Common and Abyssal for languages. (Abyssal is not optional; in 4e, gnolls were supposedly created when Asmodeus chopped up his finest warrior demons and fed them to a pack of carnivores, so they learn Abyssal "automagically". Your GM might be willing to let you have Elven as a bonus language, but that's between you and him.) They get bonuses to Intimidate and Perception (+2 each), so your elf-raised gnoll will probably want to use the background bonus for Nature.
Gnolls have three racial powers:
Pack Attack: Deal +2 melee damage when at least two of your allies are adjacent to the target.
Blood Fury: Deal +2 damage when bloodied. (Rises to +4 at level 21.)
Ferocious Charge: (Encounter) You charge, dealing +2 damage on a successful attack. (Rises to +4 at level 11, and +6 at level 21.) If bloodied, double the bonus damage and gain the same number of temporary hit points.
Average Height: 7' -7'6" (2.1336m - 2.286m)
Average Weight: 280-320 lbs. (127kg - 145kg)
Speed: 7 squares
Vision: Low-light

Wow, thanks for that. I was planning on introducing him to a game on the weeked. I believe they're still on 3e though so I'm not sure how the character would be worked in that case. For the most part the campaign seems to be rather shits n giggles though so we may just make up for it as best we can.
I did end up multiclassing him into rogue in a recent Pathfinder game. Would have been much more fun if everyone else wasn't rolling sorcerer, cleric and a druid who'd buffed his wolf into a bigger tank than the pally ¬.¬
But that's Pathfinder for you, broken when people want to statwhore :P

I only play 4.0 (yes go ahead and laugh at me) and the DM makes up all his own campaigns. My group is HUGE; we have about 9 people when we're all there. It's ridiculous. We have: a rogue (me), a ranger, cleric, warden, sorcerer, barbarian, bard, fighter and another sorcerer. (Or wizard? Unsure. One sorcerer just does regular magic ranged hits and the other summons things.)
