When I drew up Iyatsu's ref, what happened was that I drew Iyatsu's teeth and mouth kind of derpy, for a few reasons.
First and foremost because I didn't really know how to make it at least somewhat realistic looking, but also because I just wanted to get it done and show it off.
I didn't mean for Iyatsu's teeth to be taken at face value the way I drew them... they looked just retarded.
So I drew Iyatsu's jawbone with new knowledge of how jaws anatomically work.
If you try to guess what animal this jawbone comes from, give up, cause I invented it.
Eventually I will try to draw Iyatsu's muzzle or skull to compliment this.

I have diaspora in my mouth and that's why I use Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash to kill both the bacteria that causes bad breath and the bacteria that can cause tooth decay!
Anyway, the diastemata is obviously just to make for a more badass skull.
But really, I don't think I've gotten a clear answer on why diastemata exist, but I think it may have something to do with the evolutionary development of a larger mouth not coinciding with evolutionary development of more teeth, so certain teeth are just going to group together for a particular fuction in particular areas instead of filling in anywhere. Basically, you have an animal that has evolved to have a larger mouth, but there's been no need for more teeth to grow. Or, of course, there could just be a gradual loss of teeth for one reason or another without the mouth becoming smaller.
