I'm not so sure about the background. Can you take it out of focus a bit (blur it) so it doesn't look computer animated, and perhaps add some other filter effects to make it more abstracted? If you send me the image, I'd be happy to take a crack at if it I have time. Shouldn't take me more than a few minutes to whip something up.

Alternatively, have you consider a stock photograph of a real beach?

great work--fittingly enough isn't the bear more or less California's state animal anyway? (as seen on "California Republic" flag; Joe Ekaitis did a kind of bear/Cali. flag tribute at one point)

Also, you might want to check out Inkscape, an Adobe Illustrator-like clone. I started using it last week to do "inking" work and I've been very pleased with the results so far.
