As February comes to a close, I conclude my "Sweeps Month" presentation the same way I'd started it: with myself in a group shot of furry folks. And once again, there is a touch of pathos connected to this rare 'photo-op'...
The year is 1993. I was living in Reading, Pennsylvania at the time, when I'd received a phone call from one of my anthroartist friends. It was Steven F. Scharff of Union, New Jersey, who had informed me that he and his parents were moving out west (later that year) to Henderson, Nevada (just outside of Las Vegas); and he invited me to attend a little 'going-away party' he was throwing. I not only accepted his invitation, I'd even brought along two other anthroartist friends to said party: brothers
MistyPine01 and
Leoni2 from Philadelphia. I even went out of the way to have a customized ice cream sheet cake made for the occasion. (It featured an illo of Steven's 'fursona' as a ram.)
When the three of us arrived at Steven's abode, we had learned that he'd invited an anthroartist guest of his own: John P. Morgan (also from New Jersey).
Together, we all had a great time. I'd brought some animated video shorts for entertainment purposes, and many of us drew in each other's sketch books. As for refreshments, Steven's mother made us some turkey tacos, which were washed down with soda.
Naturally, I had brought my 35 mm camera along to capture moments from said 'going-away party'. The following photo was the best of the bunch, as it depicted three veterans of both the fanzine "Inside Joke" (where I'd first became acquainted with Steven and John, and their cartooning talents), and the 'funny animal' APAzine "Rowrbrazzle" (which Steven was a member of since Issue #2 back in the mid-1980s, and which John and I would subsequently join later on).
This photo now has extremely sentimental value, as it represented one of the few times I got together with John (the other times being mainly at 'furry conventions' like "AnthroCon"). As many of you may (or may not) know, the artist/creator of "Fission Chicken" passed away in late December, 2010. Members of "Rowrbrazzle" will be paying their respects to John P. Morgan in an upcoming 2011 issue...
I'll have more incredible 'photo-ops' (of yours truly with other unique people) in May - the next big "Sweeps Month". I hope you'll all be there...
In the meantime, you can still check out John's "Fission Chicken" webcomic at http://www.fissionchicken.com/
