i don't know what has happened with the sonic comics during the last 8 years or so. i started getting them to read to my boys (who were both into the early games) and found that there were some good characters and stories there (around issue 40 or 50 or so)....sometime around issue 120 or 130 or so the kids and/or i lost interest or something....
Then the fans and furries online sort of took-over and made them their own. ...and the games started to...well...loose their character?
But there is still much wonderful Sonic art online, so, yeh, still a fanboi! (except fr drowning in Sonic 1 - ooh i hated that level!)

Well, when the games first came out, he never really had a character, he was a silence protagonist. Most of the cartoons and comics had to guess what he would be like, so you have differing personalities of him, some serious, some goofy, and some reckless. I think the archie comics did it best trying to use all the personalities together, resulting in a complex character.
They tried to do the same with sally but it didn't work out to well, she really can't play the emotionally weak female character.

Agree that the comix had the most developed characters and stories. Sally had to take life seriously, while they tried to keep Sonic Bart Simpson-like - That didn't work. So they tried to introduce his roboticized uncle and aunt - felt too artificial - then to make him an outcast due to rival politicos - also felt forced. There were also some lame chars... The Knuckles book seemed to have promise, but the pacing got off....
Still there was some good stuff there...

Seeing how the comic is well over 20 years old, a lot of different artists and directors tried to take it into different paths. Like they had one plot last several episodes, but a new crew came along and ended it in a few short pages to make way of their own. I like to think of it as how life in a society recently re-seized threw rebellious terrorist acts would be like. A large, unstable population would have new problems and new factions fighting for power every day. I get a sense of them fighting so hard for their freedom, now they must fight to keep it. They came from a world of order and tradition what doesn't work out in the current times they are in.
Yeah. i'd have to check back thru the issues to see when i started reading them...around #50 or so?
Started getting them to read to my two young boys who loved the games went up to #120 or so (?) - they kept changing artists and writers - some of it was sort of awful - but a few issues on it would get better.
i think why there has been so much fan art etc related to that series is that the fans saw the potential there for an interesting world and possible characters that never quite materialized...So the fans took it for their own...

I think #50 was suppose to be were the original series was suppose to end, sonic killing robotic and freeing all of mobians. But that is when I think the main writers got replaced and they decided to keep the story going. They tried to add in new characters later on but with a such diverse set of personalities in the main characters, it was hard for them to stick out as individuals and they were viewed as just replaces of the main characters or just aspects of their immature past they already over came. I find it weird, but strangely interesting, how the heroes grew in mature over the years while the villains just became more stereotypically goofy. Like the first robotnik in the first 50 episodes was more realistic as a obese human, then later they switched him to the more disproportionate japanese version of him.
They just killed off unused characters like tommy the turtle and that horse guy to get more dramatic effect. That piglet guy who was just a recruit in the sally mini-series became a major political figure in the new republic and I was like, that is a big promotion for him.
Speaking of sally, my favorite character, she does seem to be the biggest slut in the series. I mean really, in the early episodes we always knew her and sonic were going out, but there was always a rivalry between sonic and antqueon. I thought that was to be expect, a simple love quarrel interest in the story to liven it up. but then she meant the skunk guy in the mini-series and every time after that when she was alone with him they would make out, even brazenly kissing him in front of sonic. I mean, man, that was slutty, making out with a guy while on a mission and she actually had to stop and say "we don't have time for this." she only stopped making out with him after he got married to the cat. Then after that she had a fling with knuckles. and then she fell in love with that monkey guy who was originally was mean to her and kidnapped her, she decided to go out with him and even moved to his home country to see if it would "work out" for a few months. It just seems like she is only interested in sonic when no one else is available.

...Wow... i'm glad i missed a lot of that. :(
The skunk-guy psuedo James-Bond/Pepe Le Pew - i recall a story line where he was trying to capture/kill Sonic as a traitor, a scene where he forcibly grabbed Salley and smootched her against her will... didn't see that later stuff...Guess they were trying to introduce a rival in the romance, but it sounds like the writers involved were clueless, tasteless, and nearly wrecked (or did wreck) the story!
sort of brings back why i feel the fans on-line saw the potential of the characters and possible stories while the games and comix fell flat... ...the fans owning the characters and stories is mostly a good thing i think....if a few fans do strange stuff there's stiff a sort of overall sense of where the fans think the characters are going.... At least until we get to the Sally vs. Amy, Julie Su vs. etc...stuff.

As far as they can do, they have deluded sex scenes, that simply implies it happened without showing it or saying it directly, I think of it as a way to spur on fan based creation. but sally seems to have a lot of romances, especially with male of authority.
Like in one episode, bunnie is laying next to sonic and later comments on it by saying "I had a nap with sonic to try to make my husband jealous" implying what i don't know.
Or when evil sonic was pretending to be the real sonic to hook up with the girls in the village and he came cross amy who thought he was the real sonic and they went back to her house together and a page later showed him walking out with amy yelling behind him "come back later and we can hang out again" or some thing to that effect and comments from sally and other characters imply some thing happened.
But after that, implied sex became a lot more subtly.

i guess i stopped getting the comix before this sort of...lameness...happened.
i used to regret not keeping-up with the comix as the kids got older...
no regrets now. i think i cruised along when the charm and potential of the games were still a sort of glow, before both Sega and the comix got bent trying to be "commercial" after marketing gurus and 'so-edgy' hack writers thought this was their big break for the big dollars (heee!)...

i thought Sonic R was okay (Saturn), a decent racing game in the tech of the time. Adventure 1 on dreamcast okay...Big and E-102 Gamma stuff could be passed bye fairly quickly - Tikal and Chaos were sort of interesting - Amy a bit...odd -trying to be cute but mostly annoying. Adventure 2 had some interesting interplay between Knuckles and Rouge, the Shadow story,,,not so interesting, like all the various forms of super-sonic...
The Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles piggy-back cartridge...Yeah, classic.
