This is an older sketch (you can see it dated 2002) and was originally a very rough job. My interest was mainly in the costume. Not much later I did an equally rough job colouring the thing, using pencil crayons. And there it lay...
Until I wanted to create a good avatar for use on FA. This was the best candidate, but it needed quite a bit of tweaking to bring it up to par. I've painted over most of the drawing, brightening the colours and smoothing out the roughness of the original pencil crayon work. I've traced the outlines as well. After that a quick air brushing for a background, and recourse to the type tool. This version is proportioned for fanzine use, though at the moment I don't have any in mind.

Years back, you never saw Saara in anything but a functional mirror-like tunic that was her work outfit. (It was in fact an extention of her spaceship, connected through some sort of sub-space.) But a few years ago I had an insight into the sort of fashions her people wore and started to use them. The metallic theme is continued in the seamless gold and silver paneled skirt seen in this drawing.
Most commonly worn dress would be something that draped over the body like a serape, or a Russian shawl. But the cut can be almost anything, as can the material, colour, and size. Simple tunics would come next in popularity. Tight clothes are generally out, since they don't go on over fur very well. But Saara will put on something tight now and then, just for fun. You can bet that she gets it off again, rather quickly. Then there's nudity. Among the Kjola its acceptable in casual situations -- they don't become fat, bald, wrinkly, greying, middle-age geeks like we do. The only words they have for nakedness, actually, are roughly "undecorated," "plain" or "simple". The idea of defenseless ness or vulgarity isn't part of their language.
