YES, MY CREATION LIVES!!!
The printer still needs some tweaking but considering that this is a fairly 'extreme' object to make on my particular printer it works well.
Bud here is around 2.5 to 3 inches tall and made of blue ABS plastic... because I didn't have green. Took 5 hours to print.

Thanks, I worked quite hard on it.
And it's a self made 3D printer known as a "RepRap", a printer that can print it's own parts, which means most of the parts were printed off another 3D printer.
I've also tweaked with it where the layers are much much smaller so there's better detail. So hopefully I can start on offering up plastic Bust commisions.

Well, you get my respect for that :D
I've heard about the RepRaps before but I'd always figure they were pretty rare. Apparently they do a good job printing :o
You've got something pretty rare there, so def consider doing commissions. I don't think you'll have much contest :D
About the ABS. How refinable is this plastic, like using sandpaper or some other more careful method? I know some plastic sort of tears when sanded.
Some commercial printers print stuff like sandstone, which I would assume, is sandable o.o

Well, the great thing about this is that I can sand it as long as I dont go thrashing around with a big power sander. Not to mention that, apparently, you can slightly 'melt' the outside with Acitone (fingernail polish remover) to give it a very glassy exterior.
Though I have yet to test/confirm/protect this.

3D model printer.... So, that like, takes a generated image and files down various materials until the block of whatever is widdled down into the shape of the image, right? I've always wondered how those things worked (not to mention thought they costed TONS of dollars). After seeing the image of the gator and this, I gotta say, this looks pretty dang cool =O Seeing the comment up there you custom built this thing too??? DAMN. That's awesome on so many levels. Faving for both how neat this thing is as well as knowing the story behind it =3
Actually, you've got it backwards. It doesn't take a block and chip it down, it actually 'adds' material from the bottom up. Like, imagine building a mountain of glue using a hot glue gun, that's kind of the deal, but done robotically.
And I didn't custom build it, I built it from scratch... sort of. I got the parts and put it together. Half the parts were actually printed off another 3D printer, so I can print new parts and either replace broken ones, or build a second printer.
Just type in 'RepRap' in youtube and you should find some videos of how they work.
