Actually I have been talking to a friend about doing something kinda similar to what you are describing only on a slightly larger scale. There are these things called wooden quilts that some wood burners do, a woman in my club participates in it. Its kinda like the ACEO projects where artists decorate a certain size piece of wood and trade with each other. Yea, that's what I was trying to say. Quilt is a much better term than mosaic. The idea of having a whole bunch of different artist's styles crammed together is something special. Although the ocd side of me dies a little when I see something like that :) A quilt with a theme could a really cool piece.
