The cheerful version would have read as follows:
"Three days march behind me lay a battleground of a thousand corpses... and somewhere in there lay my car keys..."

There is nothing wrong with more serious artwork! When I 1st started to read it, I was thinking it was going to be like an old Dusty Rhodes speech like "I have wined and dined with Kings and Queens, and had to live off Pork & Beans!" As I read further, I spotted a twist at the end, which explained the guy's depressed state and personally, I thought it was great!
Writing away - 2nd novel in a series. Hammering away at Harper Collins etc about book deals... Chasing the ^&%$ movie folks about my production funding...
Oh - oddly enough, the "Castles and Crusades" folk suddenly got in touch wanting to see that city module...
But yaay - much romance in the air. With a lady whose build is a dead ringer for your gals!
So - life is impoverished but good! - How's things on your end of the pond?

Reminds me of this, from the blurb of the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss:
"I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs to make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me."
––Kvothe to Chronicler
His cheerful version would have added: ..and I'm not even 30.
