I like this one myself. Also, the fan theory is it's telekinesis, kind of like what the unicorns do, but much more limited in range, it can only act as an attractive force right over their hooves. It would also explain how Rainbow Dash kicked the Dragon in Dragonshy without flying backwards, she was enhancing the kick with natural TK, which allowed her to stay put.
Well, there are a couple of things that come to mind with regards to the various capabilities pointed out in the previous comments.
1. Equestria's physics are drastically different to our own; they make more sense than the cartoon physics Pinkie Pie's liable to use but they're harder to explain, ergo the role of inertia isn't the same.
2. In Part IV of Gulliver's Travels the protagonist remarks that the Houyhnhnms can use their hoof and fetlock in the fashion that we'd use fingers and thumbs, including the threading of a needle; so perhaps the ponies (especially earth ponies and [to some extent] pesagi [or pesaguses or pegaponies...?]) of Equestria can do something similar.
