Lon-Lon Milk: It does a body good.
So, today I got the idea that since bishounen fans like to draw manly characters as bishounen, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Appropriately enough, my first target for manlification is that ultimate elfy pretty boy Link (at the very helpful suggestion of
hazardbarzard). Since normally his tunic looks like a skirt, I manlied it up into a kilt. ~|3 <3

She said in the comments of the comic where he appeared that it was mostly because people kept emailing, twittering, DA noting, etc. her to demand she include Dante in the comic even though (while he may not be a pure bishounen) he clearly doesn't fit the aesthetic of "manly guy" the comic uses.
To me, even though he's not a true bishounen in the Japanese sense, he's definitely using a lot of that aesthetic as fangirl bait (the silky white hair, the fine features, the smooth pale skin and slight frame, the Visual Kei-like outfit).

I admit that Dante is a mix of manly (manly, not beefy, mind you) and Bishie. But why is that a bad thing, I don't think theres anything wrong with Bishonen at all, neither is it with beefy people.
Sadly, it seems all game creators, anime and manga witers and so on seem to know today is to either make a character extremly manly or a bishie, and the furry fandom is no better. And tat kinda ruins the fun from both for me,hence why I prefer the middle type (Dante, Adam Jensen, Basch and Balthier etc.) over full beefs or bishies.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with bishounen in and of itself, but what's wrong with it is the complete oversaturation of it. I've been into anime and J-games since the 80s, and while there used to be some variety, nowadays it's a difficult task to find and anime or game out of Japan where the protagonist is an adult, and not a rail-thin pretty boy with long hair and mascara. If the situations were reversed, and all the men in anime were the type I like and everyone treated bishounen fans like shit, I'd speak up for them, and tell the beef fans to get off their backs and let them enjoy their characters, and make a few more series with bishis.
There's no real comparison between beef fans and bishi fans because bishi fans have a million series and products to choose from, and beef fans have a handful, because so much of games and animation come from Japan (FA may have a lot of beef fans drawing art, but not so many game and animation studios). And American products are no replacement because they're all so very limited in scope and even in American products the heroes aren't manly men, they're GQ models. Not a lot of choices for beef fans, and that's the problem as I see it.

Oh hell yes. Oh HELL YES.
The hysterical thing is I was going to post to that journal but didn't have time...and Link was going to be my initial suggestion!
Personally I wasn't sure how well this would work, because a lot of the design of the characters (hair, clothing) is inherently designed for androdgynous characters, and I wasn't sure how to bulk some of them up without making them look ridiculous, or just unrecognizeable. Link was a good example, with his little forelock and tunic.
But you handled it smashingly. The kilt was incredibly inspired. I also appreciate that he has bare legs (and everything under the kilt? rather than the kinda white leggings some art gives him.
Hellooooo nurse!
Love the concept!

Ha ha, well, Link was a huge challenge, but as soon as the kilt occurred to me, it all fell into place after that. ~;3 Truthfully, I think the clothing is less difficult than it seems, because you can change it quite a bit and still make it recognizable as long as you keep a few key features. Just look at how Kyuuhari redesigned Sora from Kingdom Hearts; the clothes and hair are pretty much the same but he doesn't look weird. ~:3
I'm really glad you liked it! Now you should do some toooooo!!! <3

I've seen people bishounenize a countless number of manly men, from Asuma Sarutobi to Chris Redfield, to even my husbando, Yugioh's Mako Tsunami!
