Anubis feeding the hearts of the wicked to Ammut the Devourer along the banks of the Nile.
Anubis is probably familiar to everyone as the Egyptian guide for the dead, Ammut is less familiar. When people died, their heart was weighed against the feather of ma'at. If it was lighter, they were admitted to the afterlife. If it was heavier (from their wicked deeds), their heart was fed to Ammut, a monster with the head of a crocodile, the forequarters of a lion, and the hindquarters of a hippo.
Anubis and Ammut is ApoxieSculpt over a wire and foam armature. He stands roughly 12” tall with a 6X6 inch footprint. Natural sand was used on the base. The water effect involved clear glue, ground glass, plastic wrap and a sheet of metal.
Circa 2005. For whatever reason I did two sculptures in January 2005 involving body parts being devoured. I got no clue what was on my mind.
