ahhh with experience you just kinda know what you need to do, less experimenting.
Incase you wanted to know hoe i did it-
I have 1 layer with orange and yellow as multiply, low opacity, and erased where I wanted it to be bright and blended it for smooth shading... Then used a new layer for overlay- used white to highlight everywhere like the light parts in the hair and all around the edges and the toes and stuff... This is how i planned to do it but I found I wanted more shading so i made a dark orange layer set to multiply, low opacity, and made the shadow under the skateboard and erased the highlights like the other multiply except didn't blend the shadows

Hehe. What I've seen
falvie done (I hung out and watched her draw once) She uses SAI Paint tool, and I picked it up as soon as I get home-
She just simply cel-shades with a colour on multiply, then takes the airbrush tool on a really high size of brush, on the fuzziest ti goes, lowes it's density, and just slightly makes it a little gradient in the shading so it's not so strong, and maybe a little darker in some places too.
It only takes her like an hour or two to draw these things.
Here's the two pictures i saw her draw:

those are awesome pics. I want to figure out how she does those abstract backgrounds, to were they have a texture to them. I'm still not very fluent in sai yet, I don't even know the use of the multiply setting lol But I'm sure i'll get there eventually. I would love to be able to one day produce something that looks comparable to your pic here
you set the layer to multiply not the brush btw.
And yeah, she actually just goes and finds a texture like googling "Concrete texture" (like I did for this) or "paper texture" "Cardboard texture" "wood texture" really anything and you just get any picture- put it on a layer over top of the background or the whole picture and set it to overlay or multiply or something, lower the opacity if it's too strong.

......... Damn, neex <0,,0>
Commissioning you for this and the icon was the best thing I've done. Plus I'm happy I give artistic freedom to other artists ^,,^. Nobody gives me that chance when I draw. You so surprised me with this idea. I love it so much *hugs* I wish I had time to draw again.
Can't wait to see the icon ^,w,^ after I move I should draw you gift art
