"Many a mother has gazed at her newborn child with unabashed awe, hoping her perfect little miracle will get through this life without serious injury or pain. Sadly, especially in times of war, that isn't always the case. Some of those same beautiful babies return home missing arms, legs, sight, or much worse -- hope."

unfortunately the government can only do so much.. I have been with this organization for a long time and they really have made a difference. there have been cases where soldiers they've helped have lost all 4 limbs AND eyesight... it's so tragic. that's why this organization is great; it helps give them the independence they want so they don't spend the rest of their life completely dependent on others
ultimately i believe it has to do with how people view individuals. some individuals go over into a war with high hopes and a lot of illusions - some get drafted (not anymore, but they used to), some get pressured into it by friends or relatives or economic situations.
the army makes its deal look very sweet, and they work on hooking kids very young. i was getting calls from the air force before i was out of highschool, because i'd taken a military-issued standardized test to prep myself for the SATs.
ultimately to many of the soldiers, it's a job. it's a really LOUSY job, and they don't like it, but it's a job. we all know how hard those are to come by in the US right now. it's a job where they get shot at and come home wounded to people who snub them just because they'd been involved in an idealogical conflict. which is why people opt to support troops and not the war.
a soldier is an individual. you don't know their individual circumstances or story - you can't until you ask. and until you ask, it's kinda crass to pass judgement on them :o don't judge a book by its cover and all that.
the large part of this push to help troops originated with 'nam. nam drafted people to fight against their will, and when the soldiers returned home they found all the political animosity towards the war directed at them individually. it was really awful. you came from a war you didn't want to be in (that NOBODY wanted to be in but the brass) to a country that didn't want you and wouldn't help you. a lot of those vets are now our uncles or fathers or even grandfathers, and to think about the fact they had to endure not only a physical war but a psychological war upon return is kind of heartbreaking. people like fivel and her mom and folks who support the troops are just trying to ensure that never happens again.

i apologize but i'm going to hide these comments, only because i don't want this auction's comment section taking a turn for the worse! I completely understand your point of view and it is also important to support our more local heroes, but this isn't the place to be talking about this, please. thank you for keeping it pretty civil, though!
WELL-
From FA auctions, I've never seen an auction last further than a week(7 days). XD But it's not unheard of.
Maybe because of the mass amount of comments or people losing their bids from forgetting and deleting the previous comment.
Usually a full work week(5 days) is the way to go. Not too short or long. Need an ending time of day too. (Ex: 12pm EST)
Just trying to find out myself to make sure I don't get snubbed while I'm at work. XD

I just have so much respect for soldiers that I thought it was time I really tried to help out. HFOT is a really great group because the homes they build give those soldiers independence again. It's really hard for them to hold on to their pride when they have to rely on others 24/7 to take care of them. HFOT builds special homes with unique showers, toilets, and all other household objects that make it so they can be independent and can do things on their own!
I can't do much other than repost this sadly. However, my mate and I greatly appreciate this (he is active duty USMC) and fully support you and your cause! I hope you get what you're looking for to help these men and women who serve us and end up getting screwed in the end
simply getting the word out helps so much! i hope your mate stays safe and even donations as little as $10 help out. The site actually has a list of how much your donation can help, and if I can get up to $250 it would be enough to get a keyless entry front door! I know some of these things you're able to donate for seem insignificant, but for these soldiers it makes a world of a difference.
Believe me, I know. I'm hoping to start my new job soon (fingers crossed!) so I may be able to donate then :) Being unemployed blows because I can't donate to things like this that I really want to.
He says to tell you thank you. Sadly, he's getting out because of the budget cuts. But he'll always be my Marine :3

Ticks me off when people say the troops don't deserve anything.
These are usually the same chickenhawks who used excuses, Connections etc etc, To avoid enlisting/being drafted when they were of age.
Even though this is meant for American soldiers, I still feel this deeply, Because I myself am a conscript.

It is understandable when someone hates the current war the US is in. I myself thinks its pointless and is one of the reasons I hate seeing these young men and women coming back hurt from this war; they are giving their lives for nothing. But it is not their fault, it is the people who are sending them there.
It just bothers me because they say these soldiers are evil and we should hate them, when it is obvious that they truly love this country and are willing to fight and give their lives for it.

I know one particular incident:
Do you recall a man named "Pat Tillman"?
Gave his life, Even though he did not believe in "The Other Side".
What does he and his family get in return?
All manner of Fundamentalist Christians, Badmouthing them.
==============================
One thing I've learned in Boot Camp:
"When you're in a rat infested trench, With the smell of death and decay everywhere..."
"A fully loaded, Well oiled rifle, Is a more welcome sight than the bible."

As a USN Corpsman I can say this is a very touching and very welcomed event you are doing. As a corpsman I have seen many of soldiers beaten and battered, some able to cope and others not cause they feel no one is there for them. What ypu and your mother are doing is more then just 'Homes For Our Troops', it is mending the spot that was taken from them for making the sacrifices needed to continue making this country great. As part of at least the USN Corpsmen, thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for helping to mend these great men and women.
sorry for not being able to reply sooner!
That was a very touching comment, it's those kind of comments that really make it worth it in the end, knowing that it really does make a difference.
There are many people out there that don't support the troops or what i'm doing, and I don't care since people can have their own opinions. I just see these veterans who have families to take care of and they can't even access their own home. It's heartbreaking. The only veteran in my family is my grandpa (WWII), so I feel blessed that I don't know anyone personally who has been in this situation. However, that will not stop me from helping those who are, simply because I don't know them. I'm not afraid to show love to soldiers I've never met!
thank you once again for that comment :)

I think that this is really good, to help those who have woonds from ether fire fights or EMD's . But isn't going in the army and serving your country in war just already the warning that there is a risk on getting hurt ? I mean i have no problem with it in an way, but you shouldn't feel all to much surprised if something happens . just like Vietnam , in Afghanistan its to open and not a good habitat for war.
Don't get me wrong though i have something against war and America, but i think no one really cares about that (my opinion that is). As i said its a good cause and this i indeed beautiful for the one's that well have ether physical or mental scars. To build suited homes for them. i will donate some in 11 days , 21th is the day i get mah cash !

There definitely is a constant risk of injury in war. It is war, after all! It's not necessarily me feeling surprised or shocked when they get injured, but more surprised how little the government does to help the veterans who are now handicap. They only give a set amount of money to them, but it rarely is enough to help them renovate their home to make it completely accessible. Especially when someone has a home that's more than 1 story, it's incredibly difficult for them to be able to adapt to that home.
I'm pretty patriotic but there are so many things about this country that are wrong. There are many things I want to change about America, but I feel like instead of just hating my own country I'll do my best to try to help others and be part of the change that will slowly help get this country back on its feet.

Allot of people hate America fow what they do, as you stated " there are so many things about this country that are wrong" and there is nothing wrong with being proud of your country ,every one and everything has it's flaws nothing's perfect . but yea You're a good chap for doing this , i think the people who are affected will appreciate this
