"I don't like it because it is the "in" thing right now" I dont understand this mindset. Never have. Not just regarding the show, but anything in general. Whats the point? Please explain your take on this; perhaps Ill gain a little more insight as to what drives people to think this way. Personally I think an ideal like that just short-changes the viewer...its like saying "Im not going to see the Avengers because its popular and full of hype". Well, generally, popular stuff is popular for a reason....because its good.

I believe she is saying that she isn't going to paint anything related to the show for just attention.

I think what they're trying to get at is that they're not just watching it to get on the bandwagon of watching it just because everyone else is- the whole if everyone else jumps off a bridge will you too? kinda thing. And someone could simply go to see the Avengers because the premis sounds cool to them without caring that its popular, they might have heard of it because of the popularity but the driving force to go and see it is not just to say "yeah, I've seen it too."

And things aren't neccissarily good because they're popular, simply appealing to a large demographic. If you're part of it then you'll likely think its good, even if its got flaws or is generic and if the mass appeal aspect doesn't work for you then you'll likely find it overated. Thats not to say some things don't become popular because they're actually awesome (and plenty of good things never become popular due to a lack of general large appeal things or marketing), but that may be in part bias on your part for liking what its selling you. If not, you wouldn't see the very common duality of lovers and haters on popular items such as Twilight, Justin Beiber, Naruto, MLP, etc. Its not just a "hipster" mentality, though that might be part of it for some people.
