This is a commission that I posted the B/W development work amongst my first FA posting. The piece was a challenge since I needed to get both the clients character, the female raccoon, and my character Petina DeMouse into the composition. After much fussing we hit upon this design. One things that I included in the piece was the gold medallion around the coon's neck is styled after the gold pieces from the first Pirates of the Caribeean film.

Yeah the fumes in real life would probably bowl over a normal mouse. but Petina is not a normal mouse. Years ago I read Tim Power's "On stranger tide"novel; at one the main character describes opening a bottle of rum that has been sitting in the tropical sun. He descibes the aroma and fumes of the rum practically "exploding" out of the bottle. Well I like rum so one day after reading the book I decided to take one of my bottles out and set in the afternoon sun. After a few hours I went out and pop the cork. Exploding was a good description.
Yeah it was fun getting all the right elements together for this piece. I kept looking at elements in the picture and thinking "that's too modern" or " that looks too pristine". I didn't want to make it look like everyone was wallowing in dung, but I also didn't want it to look like the either the innkeeper or any of the characters had just come back the shopping mall. In the end National Geographic was a real savior! FYI. The coins are real period currency I borrowed for props.
