Little did the phoenix Kaerou suspect that, when a certain kobold wizard cast a particular summoning spell to help him acquire some 'phoenix down', it would backfire spectacularly, and accidentally cause the unfortunate fire-bird's transfiguration into a kobold form himself!

...at least, that's what Sovandar *said* happened. Thankfully Kaerou didn't stop to wonder why the wizard happened to have a spare set of clothes perfectly sized to fit the phoenix's new form, just lying around!

Of course, the counterspell needs certain rare reagents, and a long journey is required before the magic can be countered, so Sovandar's having to take the newly-formed kobold along with him. As you can see, over a drink in one of the many roadhouses, Kaerou really seems to be getting more comfortable with his new, reptilian body, despite the rather smaller size than he's used to... but then, Sovandar does have ways of 'persuading' transformees to accept their new kobolddom...
