Thenaleus served on activity duty from the beginning to the truce as the leader of an infantry unit. Later that year, he has shared his experience and internal conflict to an interviewer.

Contrary to popular belief, close quarters combat is not typical. Many of my comrades who have served as Logistics whom provide rations to our units or supplies for delivery trucks have never even seen battle.

So, combat is a rather unusual event for us. I have always taught my recruits it’s not as easy as they think to stick a knife in someone’s chest. We all have feelings-feelings like a conscience and fear, as such is simply human nature.

The same thing applies to the enemy. We all fear and tremble. Therefore we implement long range firearms such as machineguns and other artillery to repel the enemy from a distance. The benefit of utilizing long range weaponry is that we don’t know if our rounds hit or miss. Since we unable to acknowledge that anyone was actually killed by our shots this way, we will not suffer in terms of guilt.

Of course there’s always an exception: like snipers who need to watch a mark through scope until he takes his last breath. There is also a special entry team who secretly attacks the enemy from behind. Those special teams had a different curriculum then one we had; they never hesitate to neutralize the enemy. But aside from all that, we were just like ordinal people.”

自分の放った銃弾が誰かに命中したかなんてわからないですよ。誰を殺したのかわからぬまま戦闘は終わりますから、罪悪感に限って言えばそれ程ではありません。」

「後方でずっとトラックを運転していたとか、糧食を作っていたとかで、一度も戦闘らしい戦闘を経験されなかった方もきっと大勢いたでしょうね。」

「例外も当然あります。たとえば狙撃銃で長距離から狙撃する場合、敵の兵士に銃弾が命中して倒れる様子をスコープ越しに見ることになります。それから少人数で敵の後方に潜入するような、特殊な任務を帯びた兵士たちもいました。かれらは私たちとは違う訓練を受けていましたから、至近距離でも躊躇はしません。そういう人たちを除いた普通の兵士はそんなものですよ。」
