That sounds fun. Of the Mane 6 I tend to lean toward Rainbow Dash. I've also taken a liking to Big Mac and "Doctor Whooves". While I don't cosplay, myself, I can imagine that it's easier to perform than you might think. I learned from theatre that putting on a costume and going out in public can make a world of a difference. You cease to be yourself and become the character. There's a wall of fabric and makeup separating your real self from the crowd. I had social anxiety in high school, but in theatre that didn't matter because I became a character. I say go for it if you have the chance. Who knows, it might be fun.
Yeah, personal mentality would be a big part of it, I suppose. Still, though, it wouldn't hurt to try. If you're cosplaying at a con, there are many MANY more people cosplaying as well, so you wouldn't be alone.
Also, I find the phrase "since you came out as straight" to be funny. It's interesting how roles can be skewed in places like this. Not a bad thing, just a fun observation.
