TreIII, ever the constructive critic, told me that my Konami VRC6 version of this song sounded too busy and loud for NES music. He thought it important that NES arrangements of Mega Man music sound similarly to other NES Mega Man music.
So, returning to FamiTracker, I decided to make a 2A03 version. (2A03 being the default NES sound chip with no expansion chips.) I had been using the triangle wave for "kick" percussion, so I recorded a sample of the kick I'd created, and re-imported it as a digital sample for the DPCM channel. (This being my first chiptune where I use the DPCM channel.) Then I copied the VRC6 sawtooth bass to triangle wave and increased it two octaves, then I got rid of the triangle wave. Then I merged the brass and square leads into one 2A03 channel, and deleted their echoes and secondary voices and got rid of the VRC6 pulse channels altogether. Then I tweaked the loudness of all the instruments to compensate for the triangle wave (which is quieter than the VRC6 sawtooth), but left the percussion just as loud as it was in the VRC6. Once it was safe to do so, I converted the module from VRC6 to 2A03, and this is the result.
Once I knew TreIII would be satisfied with the result, I decided to post it. Then I decided to make an MMC5 version with all the same detail as the VRC6 version, but again using triangle wave for bass and DPCM for the kick, and no sawtooth channel whatsoever (which MMC5 lacks anyway). I won't delete the VRC6 version submission, but I'll be labeling it obsolete. Of course, all three FTM and NSF versions are downloadable.
