Will that is/was the idea.
Nick and Judy (or their great grandparents, mayhap) at a dance club in the 1940s. With the high "energy" dances (scandalous things, by "normal" measures) there was the need for loose clothing to allow better freedom of movements and, this, the zoot suit came about. The fems wore loose blouses and (again, scandalous) skirts that were at or a couple of inches above the knees. The other clothing for fems is what Judy (or her ancestress) is wearing.

If you were to add one or two more greats to the grandparents, it would make it understandable that they didn't know each other when they met. Also, I'm not so sure you could say that these two are the great(X2 or 3) grandparents of Nick and Judy simply because someone somewhere in the family would recognize one or the other of them and tell them they're related. Being the product of two large families, I can attest to this being true.
