Chiptune - Sonic the Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone (VRC6)
After several relatively easy Sonic chiptunes, this was unexpectedly difficult to cram into VRC6 and make it sound good. This version is actually my third draft, after two abortive drafts that were almost "finished" before I realized how they were fatally flawed. My first draft tried to put the bass in the triangle wave channel (like in my other Sonic chiptunes), but I eventually realized that the higher pitch that is practical for triangle wave bass was completely inappropriate for this song. In my second draft, I put the bass in the VRC6 sawtooth channel and shifted some instruments around, putting other instruments in the triangle wave channel, only to realize then that lots of high-pitched triangle wave notes are actually really grating to the ears, and were too loud for the one channel (besides DPCM) that lacks a volume control. My third draft shifted the instruments around channels yet again, this time using the triangle wave channel only occasionally. Finally, this result is something I can publish. It's missing some small detail just before where the song loops, but that was a tradeoff because I was already cramming the VRC6 channels as tightly as I could.
