When animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

Ooooooooh great eye! Yes, they are both female!
I don't like to put a lot of sexual dimorphism in the Oren's Forge animal designs where it doesn't occur in the wild, since they're all equally capable and gender identity isn't a central issue in this comic. Great catch though-- I try to keep it really subtle and I've wondered if anyone noticed. Eventually they'll be refereed to with pronouns and the jig will be up. ;]

Sorry for hiding my comment! Did that on accident! But thank you for responding. I assumed they were but I love that it’s not really easy to tell aside from small details most probably won’t pick up on because they are just that, animals. Something I really love about this story! Definitely adds up for some surprises if you’ve been thinking otherwise for so long for certain characters!
I have to say, I LOVE how Oren talks. The metaphors are clever but not forced, and I like how casual they are. Also I like how the gender of individuals isn't super obvious or a huge deal. They're just anthro animals, no pushed features on creatures that don't need it. No issues with that of course- that's just a personal preference and neat to see!
Also, gotta love the casual 'oh I can snap his back it's okay'

Hey, thanks! I been through a lot of drafts of Oren's dialogue and I'm glad he reads well.
I'm also happy you get my mindset for portraying gender in this comic-- they're meant to be seen as equally capable individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Outside of ungulates maybe, I just don't see a stratified society naturally developing along gender roles, and I personally just don't like having wildly different designs between sexes if it isn't serving the story.

Yes, they are the proof of predators aren't merciless killing machines, not all of them at least, they can control their instincts and take decisions. As I said on a previous comment, the only reason why Egg didn't kill any prey was she didn't want. Perhaps the rabbit missed everything in the past, but he isn't the exception in this world. Now, he's not willing to give the benefit of the doubt to anyone... he isn't a good "person" hehehe.
Ever played Overgrowth? Good scene between the Protag and another Rabbit where the Protag lists off the wolves he's killed, I believe it was about 12?
The other Rabbit asked if that was how many people he'd killed, he said no, wolves, he lost count of people a long time ago.
Similar thing here, predators are not people they are existential threats, they will kill you and eat you and they are bigger and naturally more dangerous than you. So I can happily see why she's kept the pelt of one.
As an added bonus it may very well unnerve her foes, make them hesitate, provide a perfect opening for a spearpoint.

even with all that taken into account, that doesn't make her any less of a killer. also i disagree on your predator argument because all predators, like all the other creatures, are fully sentient, intelligent with their own language, customs and emerging cultures... they are people, ever single one of them. if they weren't, well... the comic's protag is a predator so by that logic, he wouldn't be a person... but he is. he has a name, he is self aware, he had a family, he has thoughts and feelings, etc... he is a person and so is every other predator. like Egg.
Right but does that /matter/ to Hawthorne? It doesn't and it shouldn't. Egg and Rask are exceptions that prove the rule, the vast majority of predators would happily kill and eat Hawthorne and anyone else in the tribe and most certainly do not consider her to be a person either.
So she aims to kill them before they kill her, she can't afford to do otherwise. Rask and Egg are to us, obvious exceptions, to her they're ticking time bombs.

We have killers among us *says the killer with the tribes only weapon, hand with bashy rocks, and wearing another beings bodyparts*. I would say bonkers as a march hare but this one is well past that point, and I see nothing but trouble from him. Egg also seems more then happy to break fellow kins back to keep her in line, which is amazing from someone who had her TEETH bashed out with a rock by the self same folks she is defending.

I'm noticing plenty of people are saying that the hare who is wearing someone's fur and wielding a weapon, is plenty crazy. He is. However, I would also like to remind everyone, that circumstances shape who we are as people. We don't know the hare's backstory, and judging by his mistrust and hatred of Rask as well as Egg, but his loyalty to Oren, something happened to his original fluffy family. Something very likely unpleasant and bloody. He's sought out another group but won't let what happened before, happen again. However, he's become so angry and bitter over what happened that he can never truly be happy.
Sadly, I can relate too much to the hare. I've likewisee
Be careful when fighting monsters, that you yourself do not become a monster... Pretty sure I messed up that quote.
