I've never gotten around to reading any of the Greyhawk stuff, but you've definitely nailed how I imagine conversations about the crab cities come up! :V
There are many crab cities in this ocean of different sizes and shapes, they do battle for territory though I wouldn't want to be living on one when it happens. I'd also be wary of their mating seasons too.

To tell the truth, I only read the 3 novels from Paul Kidd (patpahootie)
White Plume Mountain
Descent into the depths of the earth
Queen of the Demonweb Pits
When I discovered D&D, it was rather difficult to get into the different worlds because the sourcebooks at the time were not written in a way to get easily into them. Though I always felt that Greyhawk was the hardest to get into. Though that may have been of the distance and not being easy to get either the novels or the sourcebooks.
Though years later I got a good laugh out of 'Queen of the Demonweb Pits'. I borrowed those books to friends and all found them good, especially the humour.
Then one evening the phone rang and one of those friends called. He was just reading the newest 'War of the Spider Queen' books, were the characters found Lolths destroyed walking spider palace and the description matched that from 'Queen of the Demonweb Pits'. As Lolth was still around despite having died in 'Queen...' we always thought it non-canon, especially as it was on Greyhawk and suddenly they made it canon in 'War of the Spider Queen'.
And the best was that this group of epic characters wondered what kind of epic battle happened here and it was a only a group of mid-level adventurers with some inside help and information.
Good times.
