Cultural interpretation - it is a former master introducing a former student to a current student. In some places, that's EXCEEDINGLY formal, because how the current student replies reflects, good or bad, upon how the master has taught them, and upon whether the new student considers the master worth their respect. Miscommunication? Absolutely. I think also that the bunny is a MITE too rigid, as they're making assumptions that Fen is of the same culture, as opposed to a clearly different one. Fen's confusion should key the bunny in, but they're oblivious, possibly blinded by upset and anger.
the only formal thing I see here, even from a culture where this sort of thing is considered formal, is the bunny. The former master is far too relaxed. and in those cultures, is the one who should be reacting to this. Nothing in this situation is remotely formal. In this case, it is the bunny misreading the room. Every situation where this would be formal, that are quite a number of clues to the formality. There are none here. I caught how the bunny feels about this, and how she took it. Truth be told, Miz does not exactly seem worried in the least, and has a mischievous look. which makes me think Miz just set *someone* up.
Gut instinct says that the bunny is being set up to take a pride-walloping by Miz, whilst I am thinking that Fen is about to be shown some novel, interesting ways to use Hadalen, ones she might need or want to wrap her mind around. So I'm inclined to think both are being set up, in different ways. At minimum, I think it'll also teach Fen not to be overly cocky despite her mastery, and might teach the bunny not to be so locked-in. I suspect that while limited (in some ways), Fen's abilities might be the more powerful, whilst the bunny's more subtle, so that's another layer. Again, not sure, but I am very much looking forward to it.
She came in as a teenager with heavily ingrained culture, but that culture only demands that you treat your superior with the utmost respect. When she was a student, she was not above the others. Now she's graduated and a master herself, culture demands respect :p
Man, I hate characters like this. So stuck up in their own sense of rules of propriety that they can't accept when someone doesn't show the response they expect. They think it's automatically rude and lacking respect when it's just being casual. Hope the bunny gets properly thrashed.
I will never not find it amusing whenever a stick-up-the-ass "master" meets a more laid-back master, because 9 times out of 10 the laid-back master wins, and it's never not funny.
Discipline is all well and good, but at the expense of your humanity and the expense of being able to relax it goes from "good" to "get that stick out your ass", because you gotta relaaaaaax.

Fen: "'sup?"
Bun: "We d-d-d-d-d-duel!"
Fen: "...why?"
Bun: "Before I was but a learner, now I am a Master."
Fen: "...huh?"
Bun: "RESPECKT MAH AUTHORIRAH"
Fen: "So you want to duel me because I didn't greet you respectfully enough for your ego?"
Bun: "YES! Now let's Duel!"
Fen: "No."
Bun: "WHAT."
Fen: "Your skill may deserve respect, but the person behind it has demonstrated that they deserve anything but."
Bun: "HOW DARE-"
Fen: <mic-drops and walks off stage>
Bun: <Detonates>
Miss: "Huh. I'd wondered where this had got off to," <picks up 'microphone' and activates vibration> "Oh good, it's still charged."
