While the Sultan had mixed blessings about the whole glider idea; he did instruct me to do a series of drawings of the glider for various documents of official purposes. Petina thought this was a wonderful time for me to practice my figure drawing skills. I guess if the glider had looked primitive or clunky it might not have been stood out like a sore thumb. But no! It was some modern sleek looking flying wing that was bright violet and yellow. FYI. The canopy and paint came the modern world. When one of the moderns commented about the Prime Directive in relation to the glider the response was" we papered the wings of the glider with them".

Yes.Dr. Alexander Lippisch developed several tailess fying designs in the 20's and 30's including one that went on to become the Me163. Nowdays he is often more remembered for his work on delta wing designs that led to the F102, F106 and Dasault Mirage delta fighters. Another flying wing advocate in Nazi Germany was the Horton brothers which were active at the time Jack Northrop was designing his intially flying wing concepts in the states.
Yes for the initially tests it was launched via catapult off the top of the palace walls which got some pretty strong therma updrafts in the morning and late afternoon. The finally system though involved towing glider up to altitude using a long thin strong silk line about 900ft in length, yeah not cheap, pulled by a cavalry horse. Since the glider has a stall speed of about 12mph it doesn't even a breeze to launch this way. It is with this launch method that Dawn is considering it for scouting uses for the army.
