Luke the Lucario is thrust into a new adventure when a boat crash-lands at his hometown of Port Azure. The boat's one passenger is a severely wounded Blaziken. Upon rescuing the stranger from the cold clutches of the afterlife, they learn that this Blaziken has lost all memory of his life, unable to recollect so much as his own name.
Luke, the leader of Rescue Team Valiant, vows to the stranger to help him recover the secrets of his past, and takes him into his team as a temporary member. All the while, the Blaziken suffers repeated nightmares he believes are an event in his past, and struggles to understand their meaning. Luke must now not only be the guide for this Blaziken, but possibly the pillar of strength that will allow him to hold onto his sanity until they can get him home...
