All alien species are anthropomorphic unless specified otherwise. You know what website you're on.
In 2015, Earth was discovered by aliens. The first extraterrestrials to contact Earth were motivated by a desire for humanity's technology, of all things.
Earth's sun is incapable of charging erestal crystals. Erestal is the ubiquitous power source of technology across the galaxy. Everything from food refrigeration to faster-than-light travel requires it. Having neither these crystals nor the ability to charge them, humans improvised. They made things no other known species of the galaxy ever envisioned. Followed avenues of research that no other civilization even bothered with. Humans hadn't yet colonized space in any meaningful capacity, but its science was still a thing to behold.
The species that discovered Earth, the lizard-like rynar, tried to claim humanity's secrets to creating a more compact and powerful nuclear bomb than alien scientists ever believed possible.
It should be mentioned that all known life on Earth is approximately 12 times smaller than would be expected on any other planet. It is currently unknown why this is. Given the absence of erestal present in the vast majority of other solar systems with native organisms, most theories focus on this fact.
Contact didn't go peacefully.
Human small arms were all but useless. It wasn't a fair fight by any measure. Orbital bombardments and the disruption of Earth's supply chains compounded that. Despite this, the focus on anti-vehicular warfare of the late Cold War meant humans could still be a lethal threat to a 20 meter tall soldier. Rockets, auto cannons, and tank guns were all capable of punching through Rynar Collective body armor, which was designed to protect against more common plasma-based energy weapons instead of ballistics. It was a losing fight for humanity, but still they fought with the desperation that only a cornered animal can muster. This angered the rynar.
Thanks to the bravery of a United Treaty Organization spy, the rynar invasion was detected in time to help humanity repel them. Longtime enemies of the uncompromising, expansionist Rynar Collective, the UTO sent its multi-species armed forces to join ranks with humankind's holdouts. The planet was liberated less than a year after first contact.
Offers of aid, reconstruction assistance, and membership in the UTO were accepted by the governments of Earth with barely a second thought. Yes, it may be a society that's literally on a different scale, but there are workarounds for that. Every day of human history since the dawn of industrialization was revealed to be a workaround. This too shall pass.
Now a member species of the UTO, humans are famed for their unconventional science, their ferocious defense of their home world... and for being the cutest little things ever to be proven sentient.
TL;DR it's sort of like Redwall meets Macross with a big dollop of wholesomeness and a dash of "humanity, f*** yeah!" thrown on top.
Humans are small and cute, everyone else is normal-sized and have varying degrees of cuteness (usually still pretty high). Gentle macro/micro interactions abound.
