I was at work, thinking of Pokemon (I've already admitted I have a problem). Something occurred to me. You know the old joke that Professor Oak can't even remember his own grandson's name? I suddenly realized: In the original Japanese, the term 'Gary' used for the professor was "Oji-san". Now that does translate as grandfather, but it's also used as an honorific for any respectable older man. So, Gary wasn't actually calling him Grandpa, it was more like sir.
