Yeah, they're billing it as an "adults-only" con. They had an initial page up where they described the con and its intent in a very "Wink Wink Nudge Nudge Say No More" fashion. That is, until a bunch of people called them on just how creepy as fuck that sounded. So they backed off and it's just another small furry meet-up... ostensibly, though, it's still going to be "adult-themed". Which creeps me right the fuck out.
Yeah... I'm not so keen on that whole setup. We don't know what to think either; shit like that tends to get blown out of proportion (especially in this uh... "somewhat sexually fixated" fandom) but it's really close. Mostly a convenience thing.
After browsing their website thoroughly, basically, they just want to be able to have adult things able to be somewhat open - they specifically say no nudity or sexual acts will still be allowed in public, but things like adult art and PDA will be tolerated in the open. They also expressed the ideology of "We want to just treat you like adults, because all attending will be" (even though I think we all know not EVERYONE will behave like adults.)
FE is more legit, in my opinion, and so is What The Fur (www.whatthefur.ca) but I'm biassed un the last one
Foxmas... is going to be a drinking party, sprad out. At least that's how it looks. :(
I really am not too sure about this one honestly. Even though it is a pretty close con to me, how they describe it sounds like a giant F***fest. Though perhaps it would do us all some good to read further into it and ask the convention chairs some questions of it. I'm sure they are accepting such queries

I was considering going because it's really close, but I'm not really feeling the vibe its giving off. 18+ con that seems to have a penchant for being overly sexual? Ummm...?

If the same WikiFur article you linked to is to be believed;
'Shortly thereafter, the event space and room block was cancelled by the original convention hotel. As of October 19, 2009, a new venue had not been found, leaving the future of FOXmas in limbo.'
...I doubt that they are going to be able to find new convention space in less than two months, making this an easy choice.
Other than that, I haven't the faintest idea what the convention is like, as I've never been to any other than AnthroCon.
With the hotel backing out of the contract, it looks like things are up in the air with this con right now. It was supposed to be right across the street from where I used to work, but I don't plan on going.
Their original advertising was poorly considered and I never believed that it was merely a sex party in disguise, but I am not interested in an adults-only convention. I'm not a prude, but I do not want to see unbridled public displays of affection or to wander through a dealers' room full of in-your-face adult artwork; I think there's too much of this stuff at some cons already, and if I'm going to be somewhere where porn is available, I'd rather have the option not to see it if I don't want to.
I was never really gung ho about the concept of the con (the drinking, yes, the "public adult stuff allowed" not really) but it was hard to write it off right away because it's so close. I thought maybe if people I knew were going that it would be a good excuse to chill and do some art. Oh well, c'est la vie.
What's funny is how many people seem to be happy about the area/location; obviously WNY has the fanbase to support some kind of event (maybe a more general audience friendly one but still).
I agree with you! With all of the colleges in the area, this part of the state seems to be furry central.
We already have a handful of anime, sci-fi, gaming, and fantasy events around here, so there's obviously a huge base of fans (with some obvious overlap into furry). I really think it's unfortunate. A local con would probably be pretty successful if it's conceived and marketed properly, and considering most of the fans are college-aged and not permanent local residents, I think Foxmas erred by gearing itself only towards adults who want to get extra friendly. (And it was never clear from the web site just how much of it was intended as satire. )
What this means is, we should start our own con! ...or not.
Incidentally, I have no problem with the alcohol; I didn't understand the criticism leveled at the con on that front, especially since the hotel was to be in charge of the booze. I've never been to a con that didn't have a bar in the hotel, so all the liquor you could drink was always available, anyway.
True, but it isn't generally available in unlimited amounts for free. :)
Now, they have been responsible in the past, and I'm sure the bartender here would have been too - but free is free, and some people are likely to get quite sloshed. Personally I enjoy furry conventions more when people are in full control of their mental faculties.

This one seems to be a bit more legit than FOX-Mas.

was going but either it was a dream, or she deleted her journal declaring intent. x-D

Have fun with what you end up choosing. =)
Oh hey; did you get that thing I sent you?
There was something in there that made me wonder, though; I've sent you a note concerning it to make sure things are okay.

To each his own. I'll be staying home, however.

Unless it's no longer realistically reachable from the Rochester airport, in which case I'm out the airfare. :/
