Why?

I’ll miss your style… but I guess in terms of this, I don’t have many issues with it? I dislike how the eyes look; how they are flat and floating off the body. I guess I also feel a bit like I don’t like how the body seems kind of boxy with hard edges that have been rounded off. I can’t better articulate what about that is off-putting, though…

Do you dislike the eyes in general or just on the smooth model? I think they look quite neat on the flat shaded lads

And yeah, somehow the smooth shaded stuff looks bad. like some weird 90s CGI stuff

Hmmm... I don't think the eyes look too bad in the thumbnails but it seems worse close-up. I might just not like that sort of flat-billboard look to facial features.

i still need to mess around with the eyes more
the pixel eyes are great for showing off more emotions as well as more variety in eye shapes and colours
but they also dont feel quite right yet...

Keeping in mind art is subjective, I think that the rounded features actually detract from the look now, rather than enhance it. I don't know how to exactly explain it, but despite knowing you worked hard on it, it looks cheaper somehow? But then, I really liked your previous style with the hard lines. IMO, I think your previous style really accentuated "less is more".
