About PayPal and possible 50% Discounts on Commissions
3 years ago
Hey, guys! Recently, I've encountered a problem with paypal, when it was locked for a few days, which gave me A LOT of stress, because drawing is my only source of income and if I can't get paid, I will have no money to live.
So, after this situation is fixed, I started working towards having a backup plan.
First of all, I have a question:
Will it be an option for you, to pay for commissions directly (on a site, via telegram or a direct link), with your card/apple or google pay.
Would it be scary for you? What if discounts will be offered? I am not asking about in general, but about trusted artists which are on here for decades with a long track of successfully delivered commissions.
Or maybe you would recommend something else than that? I'm happy to listen!
Just being dependend on a PayPal alone when it comes to my family wellbeing in general is REALLY scary.
Yours truly,
Fleki
UPD: Stripe and Square are not working in Russia (I live here, obviously), Payoneer is also doesn't seems to be an option, at least I can't register now

I like to generate the Square invoices using the customer's email (since they don't need an account to pay, it can really be any email) and then send the invoice link to them manually, so they don't miss it.
Good luck <3
It'd likely be best to branch out across as many payment services as you can (Stripe also offers invoices, and then I think Venmo and CashApp also work?) but - availability and fees are always something to keep in mind!
In general, I don't think you need to give a discount for using a non-paypal option as long as that option is reputable in some way. I could see offering some sort of discount to get people used to it, and prove some sort of short-term track record, but I'm not sure that for you specifically this is a requirement.
Some things that would give me comfort (in general, not with you in particular)
1. Any service that does offer dispute resolution
2. Any service that is kind of an 'escrow'
3. Less all or nothing arrangements like 50% down and 50% on completion where I approve a very small, super marked up version and only get the real thing after paying
Customer dispute service was one of my thoughts, that people might feel uncomfortable of not having it.
Were there suggestive things in your invoices that could have been seen as prostitution?
Idea is, Russia is weird, PayPal too and having only one option is insecure.
Personally, I would only use paypal for transactions because it gives the ability to reverse payment if the artist turns out to be a scammer or something goes wrong. There are plenty of scamming people out there both on the artist and on the consumer side. I've used paypal since I was 17, so about 15 years. Or more, I might have started using it when I was 16, I can't remember, but they've always taken care of all my issues when I had trouble. So thats why I trust them so much.
But in general, yanno, they asked me to prove my identity SATURDAY EVENING, I sent them everything the moment I got an email, but THERE IS NOONE TO CHECK until MONDAY.
That's what triggered me. At monday, all was figured out WITHIN MINUTES, but yeah... I'd feel safer if I don't depend on the only way of getting paid
