Thoughts on my idea for a novel?

Henlo little beans,
So, I've been thinking about writing a novel aimed at furries/scalies with aim to publish and sell it.
However, I'm unsure of the idea I have for a few reasons. The basic premise for the story is that it follows a scientist in the future who is attempting to make a dragon using science. He is not very successful, until a mysterious Scandinavian biologist turns up with the key to making it a reality, but he is not what he seems.
The only way to gain access to the data and funding needed for the project is through the army, and that comes at the cost of freedom, but the main character goes through with it and manages to make a dragon that he can 'pilot'.
The lead character gets pulled into a lot of trouble on his quest and his attempts to gain control of the dragon's body risks all-out war.

Okay so, that's kind of the synopsis. My issue is that I also kind of liked the idea of it being an origin story for Mirabilis. However, I'm worried about this making the story less appealing to potential readers. Would they want to read a story about someone else's sona?
Anyway, what are people's thoughts? :)

FA+

I suppose I'm concerned about using my own character, but at the same time that would feel authentic to write :)
My opinion. :)
The other one is more of a comedy, but still a fascinating read with deep world-building. It's called "Ritualist: Completionist Chronicles" Book 1. By Dakota Krout. Both of these are fairly lengthy series, especially Completionist Chronicles which actually has a companion series from the POV of a rival character/antagonist.
