As for medical bills:
1) Make sure you ask for an itemized invoice when discharged (they are less likely to tack on unjustifiable charges and you may catch duplicate/incorrectly coded charges or charges for services never provided).

2) If you are being treated at a community/non-for profit hospital (57% of hospitals in the US are), and your state regards your care as 'medically necessary', and your income meets a certain multiple of the federal poverty level, the hospital is required to forgive/discount charges or offer other financial assistance -- https://www.abc10.com/article/news/.....c-fe45162c9303

3) Sometimes you can contact the billing department at the hospital and negotiate your bill down substantially (50-75% in some cases).

I think with medical bills you can pay them back as slow as you want (they don't destroy your credit).

But that may be a state-by-state thing so take that with the biggest possible grain of salt. I just hear stuff on reddit (just enough to be dangerous).
