mad about Star Trek
Star Trek used to be about how we can overcome our worst instincts through our shared humanity and the, sometimes fleeting, eternal ray of hope that our future will always present. That we can be our best in our worst situations, and (DS9) that by holding strong to our best and avoiding our worst instincts we can defeat even the darkest times through light and the positive hope of shared liberty and humanity.
Star Trek is now about how humanities worst instincts will eternally guide it down the wrong path, we're all shit bastards who are doomed to be assholes, and there's nothing anybody can do to change it- only try and survive and maybe protect those close to us through violence and cruelty to others.
Star Trek's core message: 1969-2015: Be at your best, always, and even through setback and defeat the world will ultimately be better. Never embrace your worst instincts, even in victory you will only hurt yourself.
Star Trek's core message, now: Superior violence and cruelty is the only way you can survive an unfair universe. There is no hope for you, your only agency is self preservation. Do not extend kindness, it will destroy you. Even the most just and moral must necessarily embrace cruelty and violence, there are no heroes.
