the only thing i could think of might be an HDMI to USB-c or some such....that is if you have USB-c.

OH im pretty sure what you can do is buy an HDMI splitter that allows you to switch between multiple outputs, where the VR headset and the monitor go on one end and the desktop on the other, then you just use the switch on the splitter to change the two outputs when you need to

ahhhh that was exactly what i was reading, but i read someone else's comment about using an adapter for a display port first and went straight to buying one lmao, but if it doesnt work i'll try the splitter next

that could work too? im just personally wary of it bc i had a similar issue so i got a cable that was hdmi on one end and displayport on the other, and my second monitor straight up said "yeah no im not using this" lol
could be different tho if youre using like a male-DP female-HDMI adapter to plug the hdmi cable into vs one cable like i did? really dont know tbh

TYPICALLY, on a gaming PC, there is a dedicated graphics card (that's what makes them proper gaming pcs...) and sometimes built in. Often times, especially on an AMD based gaming PC, the built in is non functional, so in that big cluster of connections, the HDMI port can't work.

MOST more modern gaming PCs also have display port, which can be used with an adapter to HDMI.

oh ok i have two of those display ports and two hdmi ports in a row, the hdmi's are the ones i use for my screens so i assume that means the display ports will work to, so i just need an adapter? that sounds ideal and simple lmao

Absolutely, a displayport-> hdmi adapter is a standard component and, in the US, you can head over to most major stores (walmart even) and get one if they have them in stock. The displayports are not QUITE as capable as the HDMI ports. I usually suggest a monitor is moved onto the display port and the VR headset get parked on the fastest HDMI port (usually the one in the line furthest from the display ports. This is, however, a near purely technical consideration and for most people it's fine just to plug things in however they work!
