Why not get yourself a wireless router, and plug that into the ethernet connection? Then, just connect to it with a wireless card for your PC. Just be sure to secure it so that others can't use it as well. ;)

Hi. Pardon me sticking my big, otter nose in, I just thought I might be able to help.

I think you're having two problems here. Your ethernet connection I'm guessing is the result of the cable being too short. If the university won't supply you with a longer cable, (which it can't hurt to ask about), extension cables are much cheaper than wireless routers and more secure. A wireless router would be more appropriate if you have a laptop instead of a desktop or more than one internet-capable device, (like a smartphone or a PSP.) Otherwise, a longer cable would do the trick.

Your problem with WoW and IM are more likely to be due to interference at the server. WoW in particular has been known to have addictive properties for some people and there are universities that block it for that reason. While you're asking about a longer ethernet cable, (and possibly a female-to-female adapter if you need to connect an extension to it instead), try asking whether WoW and/or IM are blocked. If not, they might be able to suggest a solution.

("They" of course are the universities IT dept.)

I've been in the college for over two months now and haven't had a problem with them until this around the start of this week. so i don't think the university had them blocked.

as for the length, i have a 50ft langth of ethernet cable, so i don't think that's the issue as well. x3

Well, if the cable's not pulling itself out, then it could be the connector. Maybe it got wrenched or tugged or something? Could the cable have gotten crushed somehow and the wires inside it damaged? The ethernet port might also have come loose inside your case. (I'm assuming it's a desktop here.) You might try powering down and unplugging it, opening the case, pulling out the card with the ethernet port and pushing it back in firmly. But check the cable and connector first.
