I stumbled on that controversy only a few years back, and thought it was fake. Glad to know I was right.

Odd though. I've been around the fandom for a very long time, and never heard of it until just a few years ago......

I vaguely remember this when it was happening. I was reading alt.fan.furry around then and my take was that of course there are gonna be obsessed fans, so what. Recall that fan is a derivation from fanatic. Hollywood and entertainment world has been dealing with them for decades and still do, that's why studios had security guards and there was always a bouncer at the stage door of the theatres. Furry fandom is full of socially awkward wierdos, so witch hunts against them are unfortunately common, and mostly bullshit. Unless there are real criminal charges, and convictions in real courts, I tend to be skeptical.

Al's only fault is a hyper-fixation on Alvin and the Chipmunks. He's well meaning guy.

Since it happened during the early days of the fandom when sexual content was starting to ramp up, it's certainly easy to see how such a rumor could be believable. Especially considering how explicit some of the sexual fan stories and art would get and how little attention most people paid to stories about rape. I learned early on what stuff to avoid.
