If written in the American style (month then date) then today will come out as 6.26 which is Stitch's experiment number. As such many people unofficially declare today as Stitch day because of that fact.

June 16th is the official anniversary of when the movie premiered, with five days after that being the official US release of the movie. It's just that a large portion of Stitch fans consider 6/26 to be Stitch Day because 626 is his experiment number.
