June Writing Update: An Inevitable Problem
3 years ago
Heyos all. As you can tell by the title, once again I didn't quite hit my goals again this month. I did get some stuff done again thankfully, but it's still not enough to stay in the black for my quotas.
The good news is that this time I'm really not beating myself up this time. June had a lot of shit going down in my life again and the majority of it wasn't pleasant. I don't feel like I want to deal with the additional strain of adding more self-loathing and guilt onto that heaping pile of shit.
To make a brief rundown of nasty shit that has happened this month:
-Close friend undergoing huge monetary strain due to Covid making them miss work
-My own job forcing me out of my preferred spot and putting me into a new spot that sucks ass
-Roe v Wade's repeal (Seriously I will always be pro-choice and lefty, if you're anti-choice please kindly fuck off and unwatch me)
-The funeral of the mother of another set of my close friends
-Initial paperwork and prep work for moving out of my current apartment into a new apartment, which will be in the same town
Positive stuff that's happened, but still eaten a ton of my time:
-Actually finding a really nice new apartment that will be MILES better than my current place
-Summer Games Done Quick, which was a week-long charity speed running marathon for those not familiar. I basically spent that entire week watching the marathon with all my spare time.
-Getting back into Rimworld again after not playing it for literally like a year. This damn game is so fun but so fucking addictive
So yeah, it's been kind of a buckwild month. I am hoping to make July more productive, but I'm also not going to beat myself up over it if I don't, since my move to a new apartment starts in the beginning of August and all the prep work for that will take a hella long time. But let's do the June breakdown before I go too deep into those July plans.
JUNE WRITING SUMMARY
You guys will be pleased to know that I actually got the rough draft done on one of the two stories I've been struggling with! I still need to edit it, but Serpent's Luster has the basic full rough draft finally done! I may not have touched Rise of the Silver Flight yet, but damn it's good to nearly be done with one of these!
✔️ -Serpent's Luster (Gift story for Selth): 15,749 words - 13,032 words pre-existing = 2,717 words this month
❌ -Rise of the Silver Flight Chunk 3: 0 words out of an expected 10,000
✔️ -Crossing of the Paths Chunk 12: 18,803 words - 12,496 words pre-existing = 6,307 words this month
TOTAL: 9,024 words written in June!
So yeah, that's definitely a deficit of words. I was off by 7,643 words this month. Subtracting the remaining surplus of 592 words that remained last month, that means I now have a deficit of 7,051 words for the year so far. Yeah, oof. That sucks. That's gonna be painful to make up. But like I said above, I'm still not going to beat myself up over this, I have had some really valid crap taking my time this month. Besides, I had a many month long deficit last year too, but I still wrote that 173K last year despite the months of getting almost nothing written. I won't let myself start to really panic until it gets to wintertime and the deficit is still there. I also know that wallowing in the sadness has never helped, and if I keep setting high goals I very well may reach them again. So let's be optimistic! Let's set some high bars for July!
JULY WRITING GOALS
So, I definitely want to finish everything that's on my plate, and I know I've been saying that basically since the year started, but I'll keep saying it until it's done! I'll be adding something new to that plate though, since Serpent's Luster is almost done!
-Editing of Serpent's Luster (Gift story for Selth): 15,749 words to edit, including some rewrite requests from Selth for the science segments.
-Mutagen Origins Chunk 2: Expected 10,000 words
-Rise of the Silver Flight Chunk 3: Expected 10,000 words
-Crossing of the Paths Chunk 12: Currently 18,803 words pre-existing out of an expected total of 35,000, leaving 16,197 more total words to finish
Total Expected Word Count for July: 23,718-36,197 words!
You'll notice that I set my minimum goal here to a lot more than the usual 16,667 monthly quota. That's because I ideally want to recoup the entire yearly deficit of 7,051 words all this month on top of meeting my quota. Realistically, do I think this is plausible? Probably not, especially when I'll be spending most of the second half of the month cleaning my current place and preparing it to move, and packing my stuff. That doesn't mean I can't keep striving for big goals. I'm also not technically counting any of the editing of Serpent's Luster into the final wordcount, even though there will legitimately be some real full rewriting in its final third. I want to shoot for the moon just as much as ever, the rare times when I hit it will be a monumental high!
Also, I have a truly COLOSSAL amount of COTP written in my paper notebooks now. I've still been writing it in my notebooks at work constantly despite work being especially soul sucking lately. I know that if I really REALLY found my groove in transcribing these for a few days or so, I could slam down several thousand words and make big progress all at once. So wish me luck in that endeavor!
Also, as a side note to everyone, I decided to fully enable FA's Shinies system here for anyone who wants to toss some money at me as a tip, to help me get more art comms, or to just show some support for my work! There's absolutely no pressure for any of you guys to actually send me any money though of course. I will NEVER make my production of content paywalled or dependent on these tips or donations ever, all my stuff will always be free to everyone and my writing will continue at its current pace or better regardless. This is just there for the people who have loved my stuff and expressed a desire to support it in the past. Every penny you send me will be massively appreciated! <3
