Pure black on white background is also not good. You want closer tones. Grey background with white text, grey text with white background, or two colors in between.

White backgrounds cause your irises to constrict which makes it harder to make clearly make out the detail of the dark text. Black backgrounds cause your eyes to dilate which makes pure white text overstimulate. You want an in-between that "feels soft". It doesn't make your eyes work too hard on either side of the spectrum.

Additionally, your environment matters too. If you are working in a well-lit place, your eyes are adapted for brighter colors and you'll want a brighter background. If you are working in a darker place or at night, you want a darker background to be complimentary with your environment.

As someone who spends a lot of time indoors and in the dark, I find darker color schemes much more comfortable. There is no one-size-fits-all solution.

Don't worry Retro if blindness is the cost of reading your stuff I will gladly pay for it with both of my eyes.
