Ah thank you! Basically I am just confused as to what they even actually are. Like are they just pages for similar art or are they like a group server? Like do I need to know a guy on the inside?

You got it the first time! They are just a single location source for similar art! They act as a method to advertise to wider audience. For example, I run a group for Comics and the gallery is broken into subject categories (Animal comics, anthro comics, human comics, etc.) as opposed to genre. So if you only really like to read comics about furries, you can go to my group and look in the folder for Anthro Comics and see if you can find a new comic to read! So people will submit to the group in hopes someone might come across it when they search in Groups.

This similarly works for fellow members in the Group. If you like looking at dinosaurs, you can join a Dinosaur group and not only submit art of your own dinosaurs, but also see artwork of other dinosaurs in the inbox every day! And likewise, people will more likely see YOUR art you submitted! The best equivalent is following a hashtag on Tumblr or Instagram. When you do that, posts with that hashtag will show up in your feed. I follow the #SlyCooper tag on both, for example, so if someone posts with the #SlyCooper hashtag it will show up on my feed akin to if I were watching that person (but I only see one type of art from them). Groups are pretty much the same thing, just in a more organized gallery space!

Some Groups will host events which make it like a community. I used to run Annual group collabs and Secret Santas in one of my groups. Sadly, since the dawn of Eclipse, dA lost a lot of userbase who did stuff in Groups. I don't do events in my Groups anymore, for example, because so many people left dA they stopped participating. :(
