There can be issues for buyers when it comes to Boosty. On occasion, if you use a linked debit card, the purchase can be declined if your bank finds it "unusual." There have also been times where Boosty just... can't complete the transaction, and I have to either try again later, or delete my payment info and reenter it.

Also, just as a side note. PayPal can be used to make Boosty payments. HOWEVER, PayPal has its own conversion rates. There have been several occasions where what was supposed to be a $100 commission turned out to be $120 because the artist was using different conversion rates. That's not on them of course, but it's an issue people need to be aware of.

So far, Boosty hasn't caused any problems for me, but it's definitely not the most convenient way to pay, so it was definitely helpful that the artists I did commission had some guiding information to ensure it was done right. For example, how to make an account, where to go for payment, and the exact amount they expected in rubles; due to exchange rates, the amounts do change often.

Edit: Therussbuss is definitely right, banks or credit cards might get a little decline-happy when using the service for the first time. I'm unsure how it looks from a seller's end, but make sure your buyers stay on top of that.

the 1 time I paid someone with it, I couldn't even use any more defaults to sign in (google, facebook) I had to sign up/ sign in using my twitch account, then I had to use an actual credit card via paypal to pay them and as everything has to be sent in rubles at whatever was the closest to exchange rate as a donation to the seller. Would I use it again? maybe but smaller commission amounts.

Ah, that's subjective, I believe the prices an artist believes their art is worth, is worth the price. I just have a non existent expendable budget. (I am barely surviving financially atm).

I'm trying to imagine something in between and find optimal option for everyone. Now I think it might be a good idea to deduct some percentage from the artist's final price to cover commission fee for convertation currency.

oh, no more than 10% for sure, that said i tend to try to avoid it if possible which is why i've also avoided things paid in gbp and euro... conversion rates are insane at times :/

I used Boosty to pay an artist once, but my US debit card declined the purchase, even if I did it through PayPal.

I had to use a credit card from my country to get the payment approved, which is not fun considering the convertion rates are not looking good for the currency we use here. I also had to pay more taxes for that.

It's worked great when it does as I've gotten a few commissions done and used it as an intermediary with PayPal handling the payment on my side. However, just this last week I had an issue with it where no form of payment would go through when working with an artist. It didn't matter if I was using PayPal or the bank card option: PayPal would ultimately tell me My.com BV canceled authorization and using a credit card resulted in an error. I've done all the suggestions about canceling the authorization in PP and forcing it to make a new one, or to remove all the payment options and add them back in, but after a week it's still a no-go.

This story sounds like a real thornbush. Sorry about it.

As a commissioner, I don't like Boosty because the currency conversion and transaction fees can be unpredictable. This isn't Boosty's fault, but PayPal's, but it still affects my experience.

Example: I buy a commission for $50. Boosty charges in Rubles, so I have to look up the conversion rate. I go on Google and find that $50 is 3000 Rubles. I pay 3000 Rubles on Boosty using PayPal. Later, I look at my credit card bill and see that PayPal has charged me $70 for the transaction.

Again, this is not Boosty's fault; the extra money goes to PayPal, but it definitely sucks as a buyer, especially because there's no way to see beforehand what conversion rate PayPal is going to use.

This won't stop me from buying art from Russian artists if I really want to, but it definitely makes me more hesitant, and figures into how much I'm going to bid on auctions.

Hmm, I don't think that would change anything. What would help, at least for me, is offering buymeacoffee as alternative. This seems to work for many Russian artists, and allows me to pay predictable US dollar prices.

When using Boosty, what would help me is if artists quote their commission prices in rubles instead of dollars, as that is what Boosty uses. So instead of saying "this commission costs $100" and having the commissioner do math on payment, say "this commission costs 6000 RUB (about $100)". This would remove at least one element of uncertainty.

As I know buymeacoffe doesnt work as alternative. I know that smb can use but I found only ways to use it through complex shenanigans with rented Stripe accounts..... and I know it sounds little boring. well, it doesn't work for me, because I am little artist, not company having thousands working capital :D

In any case, thanks for your opinion, I will take it into account. The aspect of uncertainty, that you are talking about, is one of the most serious for me, I also love the clarity in all monetary aspects. =)

Boosty is functional, overall I've had a worse experience with Patreon than with Boosty but on the other hand yes, although one can pay with their PayPal, the fees both Boosty and PayPal takes plus the conversion rates ends up accumulating to a ~10% cut, according to my own experimentations

One thing I will add is Boosty doesn't seem to like payments above 10000 rub. If a client has to pay more than that, I recommend splitting it into a few smaller payments (eg. instead of 15000rub, try 10000 + 5000)

Have used Boosty multiple times, mostly for paying IndigoChto. Never had any issue with it other than having to use Chrome instead of Firefox to pay otherwise it won't go through. Only issue is you have to pay in rubles so the artist has to tell me what to pay and there's always the risk of making a typo and sending the wrong amount. As a result I don't really tip on it since I don't know exactly how much I'm actually paying.

I just use my phone number to sign into it.

I have used boosts a few times before to pay, and I do not like using it unless absolutely necessary. The exchange rate fluctuates and you can find yourself paying more than you originally agreed for. I run on a budget and I hated that.

I have a troubled experience that I can't pay my creator on Boosty. I only use Paypal, noticed that Boosty also accepts Paypal too
But there's no option with "Paypal Balance" and only with a bank card (which is linked with my Paypal). I was expected to prefer to pay with Paypal Balance because there's an available amount of $40. I have already set the payment preferences with Paypal Balance on my Paypal Settings.

But sadly when I move into boosty website for ready to pay - there's no option with Paypal Balance, just a bank card
And trying with debit card, it keep getting error messages: sorry we weren't able to authorize your card. please choose another way to pay

But when I need help with my close friend who have paypal to paid on boosty, it's says successful
