in my mind, it would have to depend on the type of world and all of that. Personally, I think #2 or #3 is probably what I would go with.

Still exist but some are sentient and some aren't, kinda like some evolved to have sentience but not the bipedal body type. There could be a large range of sentience as well like some are sentient but lack the vocal cords for typical language as an example.

well speaking from a Darwin type evolution type world....Why not they would have horses cows sheep goats etc etc as they learned farming and tamed animals to pull carts etc so why not pet dogs cats fish birds etc as well....

Yes but also no, a different species would probably evolve with a different social base, and develop different taboos, religions etc... humans are way more likely to be uncomfortable with apes as 'pets', but it doesn't stop us either, so any given anthro group could potentially be adverse to specific (not all) pet species we take for granted. But I think it's gonna depend a lot on how any given creator builds a world, there are plenty of furry stories taking place in a 1:1 equivalent of the real world.

I like to think of a world, in which furries are genetically modified humans, with each using body mods to suit their wanted persona. Over several generations 99% of humans are replaced, not in mind or ability, but only visage.
That'd explain why normal animals would still exist.

Pets are special examples of domesticated species - food, workers, and transport animals. A furry can ride an animal, can eat animals, could hunt with an animal.

The only strange thing is that most furry universes have so many sapient species, when sapience is likely to have arisen in only one species but would then tend to prevent natural selection causing the diversity we have today in that sapient branch.

Yeah you have to take multi-species furry worlds with a pinch of salt anyway and just accept that it's like that! At which point you might as well accept any pet species that it throws your way, no matter how strange it might seem.
I think those worlds are actually the ones where it bothers me the most though, as it seems so arbitrary which animals are or aren't fully sentient and capable of communication. Suspension of disbelief? I don't know her.

Since we have monkeys in this world, and pet monkeys aren't unheard of, having talking cats with non-talking pet cats or dogs - not such a big deal.

I never really thought about this much, but I typically consider the intelligent anthro species as completely different from the analogous species so even if they had a pet I wouldn't really see it as anything unusual. At worst it would be like you said, similar to a human with a monkey pet.

My Space Maned Wolves has their unevolved ferals as companions, a reminder of their roots, They are kept in separated biom domes what looks like the home enviourment of theirs...

My anthro world only has anthro felids/canids, and they see their feral counterparts similarly to how we see apes, but depending on who you talk to there's an element of spirituality or religion there too. The feral counterparts are seen as somewhat holy, but not entirely (it also takes place in a culture that consumes very little meat after an Event occurred, which also effects peoples' views on their feral counterparts).

They respect and value life and they see this as an evelation, that its no longer necessary to kill something to stay alive.

I mean it's all made up and cartoony in the end anyway. I don't really put much thought into it. I think it's fine for an anthro to have a pet. humans are animals and yet we keep animals as pets. my characters come from a farm setting and my sona is a cow, but I also envision there being actual, non-anthro cows on the farm cuz it's all made up anyway so whatevs. only time it gets a little weird for me is if the non-anthro creature also has some kind of sentience. I guess you could argue they're choosing to be a pet at that point but that still means the anthro is also choosing to treat a sentient creature as a pet and that's a bit odd for me

I usually allow for pets. Just never really felt that it was that much of a make or break issue as some people see it as. Yeah it'd be like the monkey example pretty much.

Yeah not make or break for me, I think there are times it feels odd, but that's usually in the execution rather than the topic itself. I think it's the internal logic for me: do these characters see it the same way humans do, or did one creator or another make characters with a different approach to pets of a species potentially related to them.

I think for any world I've created so far, some variant of cats or dogs would still be a thing. Companionship would still be a thing too I bet, and I assume they'd still have the same habbits as our real world versions do, so they'd end up in similar roles. But then my worlds are not overly creative on original species bases (like a snow leopard base but with with wings). Now I think of it, if the anthro species is a dog for example, they'd likely not need to domesticate wolves in their world for smelling out stuff, etc.

Yeah! This is something that interests me when you start to look at how a species might have evolved socially--it's not something every creator HAS to do of course, it's fine to just be 'eh this is how this world exists because I say so'--what motivation might an anthro felid species have to domesticate any given animal? or a canine species? How might this effect their relationship to those domesticated species? I like the idea of a feline race domesticating bats for nocturnal hunting for instance.

In some worlds (like mine) there is a difference between, for example, dogs and anthro dogs. People with animal characteristics, basically. It's a question that I don't dwell much about even I'm writing.

That's fair! It's not something all writers need to think about to tell a compelling story! Sometimes it just doesn't matter ^^

In my specific writing, common animals still exist beside anthros. I could get into specifics on why that is, but really it boiled down to the fact that domesticated animals have been a major part of civilization from the very beginning, so it makes sense for anthros to domesticate animals for themselves for food, materials, companionship, etc.
Thinking about what kind of culture a society like that would have, I figure that say a cat-anthro with a pet cat would in my mind be seen as something more amusing/funny then anything else. 'They're so cat-like they only prefer the company of cats' kind of deal.

It's the funny thing about being human.

A lot of the time we as a species seem to dissociate from "nature" and other animals as a whole by sentience. Which is why until the question is really brought up, there isn't much concern past the briefly passing wonder in a situation like Disney's Pluto. In our eyes, Mickey, Goofy, Donald and the rest of the gang are the sentient "humans" and Pluto is just the house pet. Despite the three resembling their animal counterparts, it's easy to dismiss the weirdness because they, like us, are sentient "overlords".

I don't think it'd be too farfetched to reapply the same scenario in our own made-up fantasies. And that's sort of the beauty of it is that it's a fantasy so concerning oneself with the confusion of the masses doesn't matter, and SOMEONE else is bound to appreciate it as much as you do anyway!

I suppose my take is that we tend to be less comfortable with any given animal in a pet/equivalent context the more we consider them intelligent, and the animals we tend to consider intelligent are the ones we're able to understand the best, and the further away from human a species is, the harder humans find to relate to its intelligence.
So would an anthro cat walk into a human house and see a pet cat and think "man this doesn't seem appropriate, how can an animal like a cat be suited to living in a house like this?"
Or they might feel so removed from small domesticated cats that they feel very little fellowship with them at all.

Well- my species Kanpolo’s can have pets, they usually have these alien seals or little cat-squids as pets. I don’t really see it weird for a anthro species to have a pet of a feral species. Especially if they aren’t being creepy/sexual with the pet.

I think characters in general having pets is cute and helps them develop as a character somewhat? Idk, just my opinion mainly based on shows I’ve watched.

Yeah I would just think of it like a human having a pet monkey. I wouldn't necessarily want a pet monkey irl, and I'd imagine different anthros in a world like that would have different opinions about how appropriate it was to have such a pet. But it wouldn't be much weirder to me than people with pet monkeys xD

It can work in my opinion, it just depends on how its done.

Sadly monkeys actualy make horrable pets, they are very bity and distructive, and have killed a lot of people over the years. Sure, a small one might work out, but, not very well, and often end up cage bound and handed over to a shelter of some sort when it becomes unmanagable. If someone took the time and effert to domesticate some sorts of monkeys they might be viable pets. Really it depends on the furry species, I can see dogs and other canines domesticating animals, even feral dogs.
Dogs work as pets because they mesh well with people, are very social and enjoy interacting with people. Cats are pets cause they put up with being handled and delt with, can develop affection for people, and can be quite nice, for some people.
Rats are actualy smart enough to make decent pets, but, most people have them as caged animals. More something for display than anything else, like a canary.
I expect most social furry critters will develop pets of some sort or another over time, with humans and dogs, it was something that they worked out long ago, where they just meshed very well and increased overall servive segnificantly.
What specific pets they would have, would really depend on the sorts of critters are around them. If they are uplifts, or moded humans, I would not be suprised to find normal human sort of pets.

Yes, well aware, that wasn't really my point... humans shouldn't be keeping a lot of things as pets and yet we do, this wasn't a thought on Should humans/anthros keep X as a pet and just Would they keep X as a pet. I don't imagine anthros are much wiser than us.

In my mind it's no weirder than a human having a pet monkey. Well, "no weirder" in the sense that nobody thinks its necessarily weird that a primate owns another primate - but monkeys ARE weird in general lmao and are considered extremely exotic and I certainly would never want one as a pet. But like a dog-person owning a dog? I think it's perfectly normal because dogs aren't weird. Does that make sense?!?! Haha idk I'm dumb.

Na I'm with you, on the other hand I feel like I've met people who think it's odd for a primate to keep another primate as any kind of pet, and on the other hand there's people who hate the very idea of being CALLED a primate, so there's not even that association for them. From a human perspective it might seem odd for a 5ft 7in bipedal feline to be insulted at being called a cat, because they're so obviously cats, but maybe in their world in their time they feel just as distinct as the first humans to be told they're apes actually.

I feel like anthros have companions, where both anthro and feral parties have sapience and live together by mutual choice and benefit rather than subjugation/entertainment for the anthro party. That’s my personal headspace at least.

Aw that's nice! I like the idea of mutual companionship across species like that.
In my headspace for my two anthro species, their 'feral' counterparts are just like our versions of those species, their level of intelligence isn't fully understood because they can't communicate their thoughts and feelings, but the society/ies developed a different sort of relationship with their far distant cousins than we did with apes.

I feel like the only reason I (and most folks) have an issue with monkeys as pets... is they're stupid smart and strong enough to be dangerous. Less so because they're related to us... although transmissible disease is a problem too- Macacine herpesvirus is fatal to humans. I think a canine furry with a dog would be A-OK.

But that then begs the question... can canine furries get distemper? Parvo? Kennel cough? I see a problem here XD

I suppose it might be a better approach to think of it less as 'would they have pets' and more 'would they domesticate any given species', we sometimes use monkeys as service animals (or did, I don't think it's popular now but I may be wrong) and dogs have a long history of working with us, so long they became pets--but would an anthro of X species want or need a feral animal of corresponding species as a domestic companion?
